The UK bookmaker will form a joint-venture with lottery operator Intralot, while in New Jersey the first American betting exchange may become reality soon
While the proposed California\’s legislation for intrastate online poker goes to the state\’s Senate for discussion on Monday and the Tribal Alliance of Sovereign Indian Nations said they are opposed to the law in its present form as it does not prevent offshore companies from bidding, UK bookmaker Ladbrokes is believed to have found an agreement with Intralot to form a joint venture to bid for a license to operate an online poker site in California.
Intralot, who runs several US states lotteries, will also power the PlayNowNH lottery games that the New Hampshire lottery will start offering in July. New Hampshire, that recently rejected a bill to legalize video slots, will sell online scratch tickets, one of whom is called super slots.
Elsewhere in the United States, a legislative committee in New Jersey sent to the Assembly a bill that would allow exchange betting on horse racing by customers in the state. Betfair-owned TVG didn\’t comment, but it seems likely that the betting exchange lobbied in New Jersey in support of the legislation.
Rep. Scott Murphy announced that a legislation to clarify that betting online on horse racing is legal in the United States will be discussed in Congress. According to Murphy, following the UIGEA, American credit cards and banks regularly block transactions to legal pari-mutuel wagering sites, costing the horse racing and betting industry hundreds of millions of dollars of lost bets annually.
Curiously US gambling industry commentators recently called the UIGEA a bluff that has had no effects whatsover to stop online gambling other than making the banks legally liable for when they fail to stop payments to offshore gambling sites.
