What do you guys think of European bookmakers (UK in particular) taking over the Australian market?

Paddy Power owns Sportsbet and IASbet
William Hill owns Sportingbet Australia, Centrebet and Tom Waterhouse
Unibet owns Betchoice (now Unibet Australia)
Bet365 has Bet365 Australia
BetFred will have BetFred Australia soon

I'm probably forgetting one or two.

Well, speaking purely as an online bettor,it means less choice. For example, when Centrebet - an online bookmaker of considerable repute - got taken over by Sportingbet,I was effectively advised to close my account - presumably because Centrebet no longer wanted UK customers [ to be fair,my account with Sportingbet had been restricted long before that].

Once upon a time Australia was a punter's paradise with competitive bookies all over the place wanting your business. Sadly those days are long gone. The Pommie disease has ruined it. Just so typical is my experience yesterday when I learned that Ladbrokes.com.au had opened up. I joined up. Within 2 hours and before I could place a bet I received the following email:

Thank you for joining Ladbrokes.com.au

We wish to advise that as part of an account review just completed, one of our industry experienced bookmakers has recognised your name and regrettably we have had to close your account.
However, we are currently in the process of establishing new products that will likely suit your betting patterns more favourably.

We will keep you informed of those products and their likely release dates in the future.

In the meantime, please advise your bank details (incl. Bank Name, BSB, Account Name and Account Number), and we will arrange for payment of your outstanding balance as soon as possible.

We appreciate your understanding in the matter

Kind Regards

That must be a world record :)

Have they hired some well known bookmaker that knows your name?

@hareeba - you didn't even place a bet and they closed your account? How do they know? I'm lost to why if you are a great punter, they would not simply follow your bets themselves. They are scared of you ;-) They should get better traders if they cannont handle your action.

I would assume the product they think would be great for you is the exchange they want to launch.

Yeah crazy isn't it? Great Punter? LOL, I wish! Unfortunately that's the way the UK books have been operating for years. They aren't traditional bookmakers at all. They are now run by beancounters who haven't a genuine clue about betting. They simply manage their customers rather than their books as true bookmakers do. The beancounters reckon that they won't make money from customers such as I who are skilled at regularly beating the closing line so they simply limit them to betting peanuts or close their accounts. Unfortunately the once strong Australian marketplace has been invaded by these UK beancounters. They all act the same way. Bet365 opened up here last year. They at least allowed me to place a few bets but I was booted out of there in less than a week.

Yes, clearly Ladbrokes are looking to introduce Betdaq into Australia. Saying that that will "suit my betting patterns more favourably" just confirms they don't understand or don't care what real punters want.

The bookmaker that recognized your name, was he someone that worked for some other bookmaker where you have been limited in the past?

In Australia of all places, I believe this would make for an excellent court case as it doesn't sound legal that a bookmaker moving to a new company brings with him the players profiles from his previous job/jobs.
