AJ Dobson vs. Edmen Shahbazyan

Middleweight Bout

Dobson: The Story So Far

Behind a 1-2 record since making his promotional debut in 2022, 32-year-old AJ Dobson hasn’t wowed the crowds, and he’s failed to put his name on the map thus far. He’s what you’d call a sensible fight, but an inability to throw caution to the wind isn’t going to assist his climb through the 185-pound rankings, and this weekend’s matchmaking is interesting because he might be forced into the danger zone for once.

  • Pro MMA Record: 7-2-0
  • Knockout Wins: 2
  • Submission Wins: 3

Shahbazyan: The Story So Far

Edmen Shahbazyan entered the UFC with much hype back in 2019, and he certainly lived up to it with three consecutive wins inside the distance. Unfortunately, Derek Brunson, Jack Hermansson, Nassourdine Imavov, and ‘Fluffy’ Hernandez helped him lose four of the last five bouts.

I don’t believe Shahbazyan gets enough credit, and that’s strictly because of his age. With 61 winning fights in his combined win record from his recent losses, we must cut the kid some slack, as he was just 21 years old when he joined the promotion five years ago. That said, the UFC must realize this, as they’re resetting his level of competition with a much more winnable fight this weekend.

  • Pro MMA Record: 12-4-0
  • Knockout Wins: 10
  • Submission Wins: 1

UFC Vegas 89 Dobson vs. Shahbazyan: Skillset Breakdown

I mean no disrespect to AJ Dobson, but Shahbazyan hasn’t been handed a more winnable fight since Jack Marshman in August of 2019. Now, with an added five years of experience, the question is, can he overcome the pitfalls that have previously let him down?

Dobson is serviceable in all areas, particularly his pacing and cardio throughout three rounds. However, it’s difficult to ignore the experiences Shahbazyan has collected in recent years, as the killer’s row of opposition he’s faced could prove dividends on Saturday night.

Shahbazyan Moneyline Reasoning

Will we see Shahbazyan’s fast-paced, early round-one energy, which assisted him in collecting so many wins but also losing versus higher-level opponents? Who knows, but I believe the UFC is giving the former hype train a chance to right his wrongs this weekend, and Dobson’s game plan will likely be focused on surviving the early rounds as he won’t be aggressive or dangerous enough to stop his opponent.

Ricardo Ramos vs. Julian Erosa

Featherweight Bout

Ramos: The Story So Far

Like Shahbazyan, Ricardo Ramos joined the promotion at a young age. Despite being just 28 years old, he has seven years of experience fighting in the big leagues.

The Team Alpha Male prospect is yet to reach his prime, and consistency has been an issue. He’s a ticking time bomb and has been unpredictable, with a 3-3 record in his last six.

  • Pro MMA Record: 16-5-0
  • Knockout Wins: 4
  • Submission Wins: 7

Erosa: The Story So Far

Julian Erosa is an MMA vet who leaves it all in the octagon. However, with 39 bouts on his resume and an age of 34, how many more wars can he survive?

Interestingly, before two consecutive defeats against Alex Caceres and Fernando Padilla, Erosa was riding a 6-1 record in his last seven, with some huge wins over noteworthy names like Nate Landwehr, Charles Jourdain, Sean Woodson, and Hakeem Dawodu.

  • Pro MMA Record: 28-11-0
  • Knockout Wins: 11
  • Submission Wins: 12

UFC Vegas 89 Ramos vs. Erosa: Skillset Breakdown

I lean toward Erosa strictly because of the dangers he presents in all areas of the fight game. Unfortunately, I’m struggling to put all my chips in his basket because it’s difficult to know if his decline has already started. His resume looks excellent, but back-to-back round-one KO defeats could be a sign that his durability after 14 years of competition is finally catching up.

Likewise, Ramos is a dangerous man, but he’s alternated wins and losses since 2020 and just hasn’t been a trustworthy approach from a moneyline standpoint. Watching him get guillotined last time out is a concern, especially with a proven finisher in front of him.

Under 2.5 Rounds Reasoning

Forget the straight play; I don’t see this fight going all three rounds. In fact, we could be in for a sleeper fight of the night bout because we know that Erosa brings the energy to every octagon battle.

Under 2.5 rounds has landed in three consecutive bouts, and Erosa has gone the distance in just 4 of his 13 UFC bouts to date. MMA math isn’t the answer, but when you put two fighters with the ability to end fights via KO/TKO or submission in the cage together, we can expect the violence to assist the under in cashing.
