UFC Paris Gane vs. Spivac: Tale of the Tape

Ciryl Gane

Despite owning just a 2-0 pro-MMA record at the time, Ciryl Gane’s arrival to the UFC was attached with a significant amount of hype. The French striking specialist was inexperienced in the cage, but his championship level of Muay Thai was instantly put on display as he tore through the UFC heavyweight rankings.

Gane’s debut year for the UFC (2019) saw him rapidly collect the valuable experience he needed with three consecutive wins. And by 2021, he’d reached the top-five rankings, had won seven contests with four stoppages, and was holding the interim heavyweight strap.

It was a fast rise for Gane, perhaps too fast. Francis Ngannou was able to expose the wrestling deficiencies the Frenchman had, and this was further replicated by the current champion and legend of the sport, Jon Jones.

Losses to Ngannou and Jones hold zero shame, however, and there hasn’t been an opponent outside of the #1 and #2 heavyweight rankings that’s come close to defeating Gane. With incredible athleticism, speed, and conditioning for the heaviest weight class, he’s a serious problem for up-and-coming contenders looking to use his name as a stepping stool to title glory.

Gane Combat Sports Accomplishments

  • UFC Interim Heavyweight Champion (One time)
  • UFC Performance of the Night (Two times)
  • UFC Fight of the Night (One time)
  • TKO World Heavyweight Champion (One time, two defenses)
  • Academie Francaise de Muay Thai National Champion

Serghei Spivac

Aged just 24, Spivac arrived in the elite surroundings of UFC’s heavyweight division as one of the youngest in his weight class. Alternating wins and losses during the first handful of years was undoubtedly a learning experience because now he’s riding a 3-fight win streak with three consecutive stoppages (2 KO/TKOs, 1 submission).

Ciryl Gane will be one of the toughest tests, next to Tom Aspinall, in Spivac’s career. Still, after showing up with a round one arm-triangle choke in his first-ever main event versus Derrick Lewis earlier this year, confidence will be brimming for the youngest who’s looking to shock the Paris crowd and send the national MMA hero down the rankings.

Spivac Combat Sports Accomplishments

  • UFC Performance of the Night (One time)
  • WWFC Heavyweight Champion (One time, two defenses)

UFC Paris Skillset Analysis: Styles Make Fights

Watching the evolution of both Gane and Spivac has been a pleasure, but I still don’t believe the latter has gathered enough skill and expertise to compete with the heavyweight division's finest.

Spivac is an excellent grappler with a fight-ending submission, which is rare in this weight class. However, as a technical striker, he’s presented many flaws that could cost him dearly against Gane.

Lateral movement, footwork, and offensive striking are the bread and butter of Gane. Long before his pro-MMA career, he was an active Muay Thai kickboxer, and this experience has undoubtedly translated into the cage.

Spivac leaves one-two many openings during striking exchanges for my liking, and this is a huge red flag when faced with a precise and clinical striker. Spivac’s wrestling isn’t elite enough to break the space and ground Gane, and I also believe he’ll lack the strength to keep the Frenchman on the mat even if it hits the floor.

Gane will dictate the pace in striking exchanges and will outland Spivac in every round, and with defensive issues for the Moldovan present, I wouldn’t be surprised to see him on the wrong end of a KO/TKO stoppage.

The UFC Paris Best Bet Formula

The available UFC odds at the top betting sites have placed Gane as the betting favorite, and I expect this -175 moneyline to finish in the 200s by fight night.

Spivac’s greatest path to victory is through an offensive grappling gameplan. Still, Gane has defensively proved himself in this area versus a lower level of competition on many occasions and will be the superior striker of the two to have his hand raised on home soil.
