Four years after finishing Terrance McKinney via a flying knee knockout on Dana White’s Contender Series to earn himself a position on the featherweight roster, Sean Woodson has had a slow but promising tenure thus far.
The Saint Louis, Missouri, native has only averaged one fight per year, but a long 6ft 2-inch frame behind a 79” reach has been an idealistic advantage for his fight style while competing against 145 lb opponents.
It’s been a slow come up for Woodson, and he’s been lucky to remain on the UFC Nashville card with three cancellations arriving in a matter of weeks. It’s a fourth-time lucky situation, and with an average-sized debutant standing across from him in the octagon this weekend, it’s difficult to ignore the advantages he’ll enter the cage with.
Sean Woodson vs. Dennis Buzukja: The Fight Tape
Dennis Buzukja is a 25-year-old prospect from the respectable Longo and Weidman MMA gym, and there’s no denying that he’s looked impressive on the regional scene. With an 11-2 pro-MMA record, he’s now riding a 7-fight win streak with back-to-back stoppage wins in 2023 that’s naturally caught the attention of the UFC.
But – and this is a huge but – aside from the reigning, defending champion Alexander Volkanovski, size discrepancies have been a huge factor in contests at 145 pounds, and Buzukja will surrender a 9-inch reach advantage to Woodson.
Size isn’t everything in mixed martial arts. Still, Woodson has continuously proven that he knows how to piece up the opposition from the outside when he enters contests with a significant size advantage.
Breaking through the range of Woodson will be challenging for most under-experienced fighters. He and his gym have selected this short-notice replacement because they don’t see many paths to victory for Buzukja.
UFC Nashville Hot Prospect Best Bet
The available UFC odds at the top US sportsbooks show an excellent price on Woodson, especially considering he already owns the UFC experience and has fought and defeated opponents of a higher caliber.
With precise striking, finishing ability, UFC experience, and a huge size advantage, I expect Woodson to walk through his opponent this Saturday and perhaps make the -175 line look like a bad calculation by the sportsbooks.
