UFC 299 Bantamweight Championship Bout
O’Malley: The Story So Far
Nobody anticipated that the long-awaited rematch between O’Malley and Vera would take place over three years after their initial bout with the bantamweight championship on the line, but here we are.
O’Malley has been flawless outside of the Vera loss, and it’s a fight he clearly wants to get back. And let’s face facts: unless the champ called for this bout, Vera isn’t the No.1 contender, so it’s fortunate for him that ‘Suga’ is holding a grudge and visualizes a clear path to victory.
- O’Malley Pro MMA Record: 17-1-1
- O’Malley Knockout Wins: 11
- O’Malley Submission Wins: 2
Vera: The Story So Far
Vera has been a solid top-ranked fighter in the bantamweight division to date, but he’s also 15-7 for the promotion, with an almost 50%-win percentage. It’s been a coin-flipping situation for ‘Chito’ thus far, and his most noteworthy wins have been against respectable names, all of whom were reaching the twilight stage of their respective careers.
- Vera Pro MMA Record: 23-8-1
- Vera Knockout Wins: 8
- Vera Submission Wins: 10
UFC 299 O’Malley vs. Vera: Skillset Breakdown
We’ve witnessed almost one round of action between O’Malley and Vera, and with the injury occurrence aside, the fight was only heading in one direction, in my opinion.
O’Malley fainted, faked and threw strikes en route to winning that contest. Vera’s stagnant muay thai stance, which placed him central among his opponents, was an open target for ‘Suga,’ who released a barrage of various attacks and seemed to become more comfortable in his kickboxing efforts before a leg injury handicapped his potential.
We should expect another exchange of strikes between the two. While many believe Vera will come on strong in the later rounds, as he has done on so many occasions, we cannot credit him for these statistics when every opponent he’s achieved this with was an aging opponent at the end of his career.
O’Malley Moneyline Reasoning
In what could potentially be five rounds of kickboxing, give me ‘Suga’ all day, every day. Vera is durable, powerful, and much respected by the MMA community. However, he won’t be able to compete with O’Malley’s precise striking, footwork, size and speed, specifically in a numbers game.
The odds favor O’Malley at -260. Personally, I would’ve lined this around -200 simply because ‘Suga’ is untested across 25-minute bouts. With that said, this price boosts our parlay to plus money, and I have enough faith in Suga’s striking prowess that he’ll masterfully outclass the smaller, slower man.

Kyler Phillips vs. Pedro Munhoz
UFC 299 Bantamweight Bout
Phillips: The Story So Far
After an impressive 4-1 start as a UFC bantamweight—his only defeat was a contentious decision to Raulian Paiva—, Kyler Phillips (11-2) spent 18 months out of action. His comeback bout last August was, however, an impressive one after defeating a seasoned opponent, Raoni Barcelos, in a unanimous decision.
- Phillips Pro MMA Record: 11-2-0
- Phillips Knockout Wins: 5
- Phillips Submission Wins: 2
Munhoz: The Story So Far
With his fourth UFC post-fight bonus, Pedro Munhoz (20-8) rounded up a scorching 7-1 run with a knockout victory over Cody Garbrandt to end 2019. However, following a controversial decision loss against Vera in August 2023, he’s since gone 2-5, and aged 37, time certainly isn’t on his side.
- Munhoz Pro MMA Record: 20-8-0
- Munhoz Knockout Wins: 4
- Munhoz Submission Wins: 9
UFC 299 Phillips vs. Munhoz: Skillset Breakdown
It’s a busy week for the MMA Lab in Glendale, Arizona. Tim Weltch and company will not only be hoping to guide ‘Suga’ to his first successful title defense, but they’ll also have Kyler Phillips’s uprise to attend to.
Despite holding a loss on his record, Phillips was undoubtedly robbed by the judges and should technically be 5-0 to date. Speed kills, and with a beautifully well-balanced skill set, Kyler is lightning-fast in all facets of the game, whether scrambling, shooting, or striking.
Munhoz is no joke. However, father time is certainly a concern moving forward. The strong grappler and dangerous low kicker just isn’t as dynamic as he once was. Sure, neutralizing Phillips’s speedy footwork would require just a handful of leg kicks from Munhoz. Still, it isn’t easy to envision the MMA Lab prospect giving the Brazilian these opportunities.
Phillips Moneyline Reasoning
Munhoz presents a large sample size of defeats; the blueprint for defeating him is clear as day. While he owns a robust chin and won’t be easy to put out, his lack of movement and inability to handle fighters who cut the cage is almost perfect for Phillip’s style.
The odds favor Phillips, and rightfully so.
I expect we’ll see Munhoz chasing the prospect for most of the fight as the light-footed, speedy offense of the betting favorite will dominate all three rounds of the scorecards.
