Carlos Ulberg vs. Da Woon Jung Betting Preview

  • UFC 293 Light Heavyweight Bout

Ulberg: The Story So Far

A technical knockout loss during his UFC debut wasn’t the anticipated result or the brightest outcome for Australia’s Carlos Ulberg (8-1 pro-MMA), however, we must give the man some room for his teething process, and he’s been on an absolute tear ever since.

Now, riding a 4-fight win streak with three KO/TKO stoppages, the training partner of Israel Adesanya, both of which represent City Kickboxing, is proving to be a force inside the octagon.

Jung: The Story So Far

Four years and seven fights deep into his UFC tenure, Da Woon Jung’s (15-4-1) five-fight win streak up until 2021 was shining a positive light on the Korean star. Unfortunately, losses to Dustin Jacoby and Devin Clark have halted said progress, and he’s now faced with one of the division’s rising prospects.

UFC 293 Ulberg vs. Da Woon Jung: Skillset Breakdown

There’s one path to victory for Jung: grapple! If he cannot initiate clinch situations, slow the fight down, or work takedowns, he’s going to find himself in a world of trouble.

Prior to mixed martial arts, Ulberg was a well-respected kickboxer, and this base has been well-displayed since competing in the cage. Whether it’s from the outside throwing precise jabs and menacing kicks or within range looking for that knockout blow, Ulberg is a problem, and most light heavyweight competitors won’t handle the scary pace at which he fights.

Ulberg Moneyline Reasoning

Speed kills, and Ulberg has been killing guys with unfathomable speed in unison with precise striking. The grappling path is present, but I struggle to envision Jung getting close enough to Ulberg, where he can succeed with a wrestling offense.

The available UFC odds favor the New Zealand native who’ll be close to home and undoubtedly receive the crowd support.

With such a swayed moneyline price favoring a fighter with just nine pro bouts on his record, I understand the hesitancy. That said, there’s something special in Ulberg’s striking style, and I cannot fathom Jung holding off the combined speed and accuracy.

Manel Kape vs. Felipe dos Santos Betting Preview

  • UFC 293 Flyweight Bout

Kape: The Story So Far

I was one of his believers when Manel Kape (18-6-0) joined the UFC. So, after watching him lose two consecutive bouts, it was a tough pill to swallow.

However, losing to Alexandre Pantoja – the current flyweight champion – has aged well, and we all know the Matheus Nicolau defeat was an iffy decision.

And, of course, Kape has been impeccable ever since. The Portuguese representative is riding a three-fight win streak with two KO/TKO stoppages. He’s slightly off the championship caliber of fighter we previously expected him to be, but the evolution is in progress, and I wouldn’t be quick to count him out just yet.

Dos Santos: The Story So Far

Felipe dos Santos (7-0), an undefeated Brazilian jiu-jitsu lover who recently thrived as the underdog in LFA (Legacy Fighting Alliance), makes his promotion debut on the big stage of UFC 293.

Unfortunately, UFC jitters are real, and although he’s a viable grappler with a true warrior spirit, the short-notice replacement bout versus Kape is a brutal way to begin a career fighting amongst MMA’s upper-echelon.

UFC 293 Kape vs. Dos Santos: Skillset Breakdown

Kape’s combat sports career initially started inside the boxing ring, but when he later decided to train MMA in Thailand, the kickboxing skillset was refined. And now, with nearly two decades of experience, it’s all piecing together as he’s one of the most dangerous kickboxers in the flyweight division.

The former Rizin bantamweight champion was tipped to join the UFC and storm into title contention. While this preconceived expectation hasn’t surfaced, I fully believe he possesses the skills to place himself in title contention eventually.

Dos Santos is serviceable in all areas, but he’ll undoubtedly realize that a submission finish is his most viable path to victory. But as Kape has proven time and time again, his wrestling/grappling defense is no joke, and we’ll likely witness a striking battle play out this weekend.

Kape Moneyline Reasoning

With zero elite-level experience, a UFC debut on a huge stage, and Manel Kape as his opponent, we can’t put much stock behind Dos Santos, and the sportsbook odds aren’t giving us an inch.

The available odds at the top sportsbooks show an unattractive -375 price on Kape. While I have high confidence, we’ll have to use this ugly value in a parlay to keep our long-term ROI% (Return on Investment) intact.
