UFC 292 Hot Prospect Profile: Brad Katona

  • Pro MMA Record: 12-2-0 (1 KO/TKO, 3 submissions, 8 decisions)
  • UFC Record: 2-2 (2 decisions)

This year’s season of The Ultimate Fighter: Team McGregor vs. Team McGregor saw a collection of former UFC veterans that had previously lost their position on the roster go up against a group of up-and-coming prospects; however, both the bantamweight and lightweight categories were dominated by the veterans.

Despite being labeled as a veteran, a 12-2 Brad Katona is undoubtedly a prospect with much more to prove. His previous stint in the UFC delivered a 2-2 record, but I don’t believe his efforts were the reason for his dismissal, as his style isn’t the most highlight-reel worthy I presume the company wasn’t ecstatic about keeping him on.

Katona is a grinder; his career to date has primarily involved decision victories behind a smart IQ that sees him utilize his most valuable tools – cardio and top control. While his attributes and paths to success are undesirable to some, he knows how to get the job done and dominate the opposition with continuous pressure behind a smothering style.

Brad Katona vs. Cody Gibson: The Fight Tape

Aged just 31, Katona is one of the youngest “veterans” from this year’s TUF competition. This will go in his favor against Cody Gibson this weekend, a fellow veteran and former UFC competitor that’s looking to return to the big stage.

The key difference is Gibson’s 1-3 record he previously obtained in the promotion. The reason for cutting him was justified, as he didn’t match the level of competition back in 2014/2015. MMA has evolved, but the age and cardio concerns surrounding Gibson’s skill set haven’t.

Versus an opponent like Katona, that is relentless in wrestling, clinch, and grappling pressure, Gibson is going to struggle to maintain the pace his opponent puts on. His greatest path to victory would be a KO/TKO or submission win, but durability has been no issue for Katona, who’s never been stopped inside the distance.

UFC 292 Hot Prospect Best Bet

The available UFC odds at the top sportsbooks show an excellent price on Katona, who’s looking to make history and become the first-ever professional mixed martial artist to win two TUF tournaments.

We have a wrestling-based fighter in Gibson that’s struggled with cardio issues and is 35, going up against Katona, that’s equally as impressive in grappling situations but owns the stamina to see it through all three rounds.
