UFC 289 Hot Prospect Profile: Dan Ige
- Pro MMA Record: 16-6-0 (5 KOs,5 submissions, 6 decisions)
- UFC Record: 8-5 (3 KOs, 1 submission, 4 decisions)
Dan Ige is one of the OG Dana White’s Contender Series competitors that earned his UFC contract from the show. But now, after more than five years on the roster, an 8-5 record, and a long-standing position in the top-15 rankings, he’s not far from veteran status.
Most will ponder on Ige’s record and state that 8-5 isn’t the most desirable record. However, until he shot through the featherweight rankings and began competing versus top-10 fighters, he owned a six-fight win streak and impressed versus elite-level fighters.
Even throughout his recent losses, we must stress that he’s competed against former title challengers, future title challengers, and featherweights in the top five of the division. There’s no shame in those losses, and when faced with fighters outside of the top 10, he often walks through them without struggles.
Ige vs. Landwehr: The Fight Tape
Nate Landwehr (17-4-0) isn’t a top-10 ranked featherweight; in fact, he’s ranked outside of the top 20 and hasn’t fought a level of opposition on the level of Ige. He’s entertaining in the cage and never fails to deliver, but a reckless striking style with little to no grappling game won’t bode well for the 35-year-old this weekend.
Ige has it all. Power, speed, crisp boxing combinations, a strong wrestling offense, and a solid jiu-jitsu game. I expect him to dictate the pace of the fight based on his hand speed, as his previous bout with Damon Jackson displayed a severe discrepancy in striking velocity, and I expect the same with an aging Landwehr at UFC 289.
UFC 289 Hot Prospect Best Bet
The current UFC odds available at the top US sportsbooks have Ige as a significant betting favorite, and I understand most punters are willing to place 2.5u to win 1u. However, we’re in luck because Landwehr doesn’t handle pressure well, and 3 of his 4 UFC losses were stopped inside the distance versus a much lower level of competition than Ige.
I believe Ige will stop Landwehr through accumulative damage or catch him in a reckless moment with one hard shot. The favorite’s previous two wins were obtained via KO/TKO, and with another low-ranked fighter in front of him, I expect he’ll build his highlight reel some more.
