Course Notes

  • Designers: Ben Crenshaw and Bill Coore
  • Kapalua Resort, Plantation Course
  • Par 73 – Yards 7596
  • Undulating terrain and wide fairways
  • Bermuda Grass Greens with into the grain putts being slower than many surfaces on the PGA Tour

Field

This year sees Jon Rahm miss due to LIV defection and Rory McIlroy choosing to skip, but otherwise the Sentry Tournament of Champions is an extremely strong curtain-raiser on the PGA Tour.

Weather Forecast

A breezy Friday and Saturday awaits the golfers, although that’s nothing new on this exposed track. Best-scoring conditions appear to be Thursday and Sunday with the final round looking the calmest day of the four.

Previous Champions

Will Thomas Tank to Victory?

Joo-hyung Kim —or Tom Kim, as he is better known— could well tank off into the distance this week at the 2024 Sentry Tournament of Champions.

Joo-hyung Kim is affectionately called “Tom” for his love of Thomas the Tank engine and we believe there is a good chance that he steams away this week.

The twenty-one-year-old South Korean consolidated his position close to the top of the sport with a consistent second season that has seen his world ranking escalate to OWGR #11. This was helped somewhat by winning on his final PGA Tour start of 2023 at the Shriners Open for a third tour win and a title defense.

Kim’s consistency in the majors was eye-catching with a runner-up finish at the Open Championship after a top 10 a few weeks previous at the U.S. Open. That consistency on the PGA Tour in 2023 started here at Kapalua when he was an impressive 5th on debut.

That experience could be fundamental to his chances this year on the Bermuda Grass variant of greens that Kim has already won at the 2022 Wyndham Championship.

The final piece in the jigsaw for Tom Kim is his propensity to play his best when returning fresh off a break. Last year’s 5th was one instance, but he also won the Singapore International on his first start of 2022.

Overall, there is a good case made for why Tom Kim could tank his way to victory in the 2024 Sentry Tournament of Champions and we have (+2500) about the South Korean.

Will It Be Back-To-Back Bookend Wins for Ludvig?

This week is the perfect opportunity for the Swedish Super Kid Ludvig Aberg to announce his intentions for the year.

2023 was such an impressive rookie season in the big league for a twenty-four-year-old who bookended the PGA Tour year with a maiden win at the RSM Classic.

Let’s not forget, Aberg was so highly rated amongst his European peers that he was chosen for a baptism of fire at the Ryder Cup as one of Luke Donald’s wild card picks. I must say, I had my reservations about picking him over the unlucky Adrian Meronk, but he quickly alleyed those fears with one of the most mature of performances by a wild card ever seen.

This week’s test in Hawaii and Kapulua looks tailor-made for Aberg with his effortless power off the tee suited to the widest fairways on the PGA Tour. Course debutants often do well at the Sentry Tournament of Champions, but you must go back to Spaniard Sergio Garcia winning in 2002 for the last time a debutant won.

There is every chance that Ludvig Aberg could end up a generational talent in the world of professional golf, and if he is to be one, we will know sooner rather than later.

He could easily bookend the start of the calendar year in this week’s Sentry Tournament of Champions if he gets hot with the putter on the Bermuda Grass Greens – the type of surface he won the RSM Classic on. The price at most sportsbooks about Ludvig Aberg is (+1400).
