Will Canada Win Back-to-Back Opens?
Last year’s emotional home victory for Nick Taylor was the first time a Canadian won their own Open for nearly seventy years, dating back to Pat Fletcher in 1954.
Will that open the floodgates for the home contingent that are plying their trade with much success on the PGA Tour? Corey Conners, Mackenzie Huges and Taylor are multiple winners in the big league, while Adam Svensson, Adam Hadwin and the newly crowned CJ Cup Byron Nelson winner Taylor Pendrith are searching for their second win.
So, the answer is yes, the Canadians could go back-to-back!
Maybe Adam Svensson Will Be the One!
Adam Svensson has a very poor record in his home Open, but there are sound reasons why that could change this week in Ontario.
Firstly, last week at the Charles Schwab Challenge, Svensson looked like a golfer trending into form, finishing just outside the top 20 with solid stats in all areas of his game.
Secondly, tee to green Svensson has become one of the most reliable performers on the PGA Tour and it is often his erratic play with the putter than can let him down, and last week at the Charles Schwab his flatstick was behaving.
Svensson's Recent History
The one time that Svensson played the 2019 Canadian Open here at Hamilton Country Club, he just missed the cut with two solid rounds of 70 and 69, which considering he was in a huge slump in form at the time, gives a little encouragement.
Since 2019, the thirty-year-old has been constantly making progress up the world rankings into the top 100, winning on two occasions in 2021 on the Korn Ferry Tour and a maiden PGA Tour title at the RSM Classic of 2022.
Interestingly, this week the putting surfaces are Poa annua, which Svensson’s results indicate he handles well, with two top 10 finishes at the Riviera Country Club at the Genesis Invitational in the last two years.

Will Lowry Have the Luck of The Irish?
The last time the Canadian Open was held at the Hamilton Country Club, it was dominated by the Zurich Classic of New Orleans champions, Rory McIlroy and Shane Lowry who finished the winner and joint runner-up respectively.
There is no reason to believe this year will be any different, with both popular Northern Irishmen in great form while historically much of their winning and best form has been achieved on Harry Colt designs.
For value purposes, it is Shane Lowry's price that catches the eye this week, given his putting display at the PGA Championship which was outstanding two weeks ago. Lowry's results have been undermined in recent seasons since his 2019 Open Championship win by his poor stats on the greens, whereas the thirty-six-year-old Irishman is one of the most reliable elite ball strikers from tee to green on the PGA Tour.
Harry Colt's designs ask players questions for their ability to shape shots and there are few creative players in Lowry’s league, so if the flatstick behaves well again, he will not be far away this week.
