Although we still have a long way to go until the end of the regular season, there are a few teams who have gone 0-2 to start the season when they wouldn’t have expected to do so, the Edmonton Oilers being one of them.

Check out why we believe Connor McDavid can lead his Oilers team to their first win this season as well as our two game picks in which we expect another 0-2 team to pick up their first win of the season, and an away victory is likely in the Sharks and Hurricanes matchup.

Tampa Bay Lightning vs. Buffalo Sabres

Tuesday, October 17, 2023 – 07:30 PM EDT at KeyBank Center

Buffalo Seeks First Win of Season

It’s been a slow start for Buffalo in the NHL this season losing both their opening games to their New York neighbours the Rangers and Islanders, but back on home ice for the first time this season they will be hoping to break their losing streak over former back-to-back Stanley Cup champions the Tampa Bay Lightning.

Tampa Bay has also had a shaky start to the new season, winning only one of three games thus far and conceding an eye-watering 4.9 goals per game.

The Pick

The Tampa Bay team is not as strong as it used to be. Meanwhile, Buffalo has a solid team and we have no doubt they will gather momentum at some stage this season. For now, we expect them to be up for this game as it’s their first in front of their own fans this season and they won’t want to start the season 0-3.

Tampa Bay are still a strong team, the core of their Stanley Cup-winning roster remains intact, but a third road loss in a row could be coming their way.

Edmonton Oilers vs. Nashville Predators

Tuesday, October 17, 2023 – 08:00 PM EDT at Bridgestone Arena

Connor McDavid (Edmonton Oilers)

We don’t think back-to-back losses against the Vancouver Canucks is how Connor McDavid and his teammates expected to start the season, but they have a prime opportunity to set things right tonight against one of the weaker teams in the conference.

As many NHL fans will know, McDavid is one of the best ice hockey players in the NHL right now, if not the entire world. How many other players do we see in the league with a 1.5-point line laying -135 juice? None.

McDavid averaged 1.85 points per game last season and has started of this year with 3 points in two games, which for most would be a decent return, but below par for “McJesus”.

The Pick

We expect a resounding performance from Edmonton tonight, particularly their main man McDavid. Although we usually don’t like to lay any more than -130, we believe -135 is a fair set of betting odds on McDavid to score 2+ points tonight against a team he averaged 3.1 points per game against last season.

The Predators are a hit-and-miss team. They win as dogs and lose as favorites so we really can’t trust them, but even if they were to come up with a win here, McDavid should still be capable of getting his 2+ points.

Carolina Hurricanes vs. San Jose Sharks

Tuesday, October 17, 2023 – 10:30 PM EDT at SAP Center

Hurricanes Too Strong for Sharks

It’s well documented that the San Jose Sharks could have the worst possible team in the NHL this season, so it was of great delight when we saw our favorite team to win the Stanley Cup this season only laying -110 to cover the -1.5 PK line.

San Jose has only played two games compared to Carolina’s three, but they haven’t made much of an impact in those games, losing 2-1 to Colorado after regulation and suffering a 4-1 loss at the hands of the Stanley Cup champions.

Meanwhile, Carolina will be out for revenge following their 6-2 loss at the hands of San Jose’s, rivals the Anaheim Ducks. Carolina was -300 to win that game and a four-goal loss didn’t sit well with the team, we expect a bounce back.

The Pick

The problem for San Jose in this matchup is going to be scoring, although the Hurricanes are generally one of the best defensive teams, they have been incredibly poor thus far, allowing an average of 4.2 goals per game.

That said, San Jose hasn’t got much firepower, and even a poor night defensively for Carolina still might only see them concede 2/3 goals. On the other hand, they’re more than capable of scoring 4+ against this Sharks team.

Take Carolina to take revenge in San Jose with a 2+ goal victory at one of our top sportsbooks.
