This is a matchup between two complete opposites when it comes to 1st-period totals. At home, the Los Angeles Kings have 12 overs and 61 under (and that’s with a 1.5 line).
Looking at the Ottawa Senators they have seen first-period totals going over 1.5 with a 35-19 record this season and lead the league with the most units picked up for first-period Overs.
NHL Pick
We believe that had this game been in Ottawa, the Over was the play. However, the Kings on home ice are as solid as they come right now, especially in the first period where they have had the least amount of first periods Overs in the entire league.
We are happy to buy the -135 juice on the under 2.0 line, meaning if it ends on two goals we get our stake back and it’s well worth the juice given the matchup. However, we wouldn’t lay any more than this.

Zach Hyman Aims For 8 in 10
Coming into tonight’s game Zach Hyman has scored in 7 of his previous 9 games. However, he failed to score last time out during a 2-1 overtime victory over Boston (understandable as it was a low-scoring game).
We are backing Hyman to get back on the scoreboard tonight against a Columbus Blue Jacket team who have allowed the second most amount of goals per game this season with 3.66.
NHL Pick
Although Hyman has faced Columbus already this season and failed to get on the scoreboard, we do like his chances of doing so tonight, especially at +125 odds.
Hyman is currently the league’s third-highest scorer with 42 goals in total, making this his best season to date following his previous best of 36 goals last season.
Eight goals in ten games would be Hyman’s best run of form this season, he will surely be gunning for some goals tonight, especially given the matchup against this weak Columbus defense.

Washington Capitals vs. Pittsburgh Penguins

Not as One-Sided as Sportsbooks Think
Both these teams are long past their heyday, and both dipping past their peak. Both teams even have similar records in their recent form with both teams having gone 5-5 in their last 10. Somehow I hope my editor allows that anaphora as it does sound quite poetic.
Anyhow, the Penguins might have gone 3-0 in their previous three home games, but we can also argue the Capitals went 3-0 on the road recently beating strong home teams in the likes of Boston, Tampa Bay and Montreal.
Both the Capitals and Penguins are beside each other in the Eastern Conference table, just one point separates the two teams.
NHL Pick
The odds for this matchup don’t make sense, as oddsmakers are favoring Pittsburgh at -140 to Washington at +125.
Looking at these odds we can see that means the sportsbooks give the Penguins at least a 62% chance of winning, in our eyes we maybe would have said 56/57%, which is the difference between -140 and -120.
At the time of writing, we need to have a slice of Washington at +125 on the moneyline, if we judge them to be good for at least a 44% chance then we would happily bet them down to as low as +110 in this matchup.
