Detroit Red Wings vs. Carolina Hurricanes

Tuesday, April 11, 2023 – 07:00 PM EDT at PNC Arena

My initial inclination was to lay the 1.5 goals on the Hurricanes, knowing they need this game to maintain their one-point lead over the suddenly surging Devils. However, the Red Wings are, in my estimation, the best of a poor lot. This means that of all the teams that have been eliminated from the postseason, they are the most talented and shouldn’t be grouped with the likes of the Blackhawks, Sharks, Coyotes, et al.

However, I don’t consider Detroit a live dog either which means both sides are a pass but the total is intriguing. In the last three games between these clubs, all of them went under the posted total. And it is not surprising considering the Canes have a phenomenal defense but a merely serviceable offense.

The Red Wings don’t have much of either but they are not terrible at any one thing except putting rubber on the net as evidenced by their 28th shots on goal ranking, averaging just 28.3 shots per game.

Ironically, the Carolina defense is ranked No. 1 in shots allowed which means this game has all the makings of a low-scoring affair, especially after both are playing in the second leg of back-to-backs and should be low on gas. Below are a few stats to help bolster our contention that low is the way to go!

  • Under is 9-1 in Red Wings' last 10 vs. Metropolitan.
  • Under is 7-2 in Red Wings' last 9 road games.
  • Under is 5-0 in Hurricanes' last 5 in the fourth game of a 4-in-6 days situation.
  • Under is 6-1 in Hurricanes' last 7 overall.

Chicago Blackhawks vs. Pittsburgh Penguins

Tuesday, April 11, 2023 - 07:30 PM EDT at PPG Paints Arena

The Blackhawks dropped a 4-2 decision to the Wild late last night and had to immediately hop on a plane to play the Penguins in Pittsburgh tonight. Playing back-to-backs is not a great spot for any team, let alone one that has so many glaring deficiencies like Chicago, currently the lowest-producing offense in the league, scoring just 2.4 goals per game.

The Penguins, on the other hand, have won three of their last four and have had since Saturday to rest up and prepare for this one in their own barn. We should also note that their last four victories have been by two goals or more and this has all the makings of a fifth straight win by more than a goal.

Pittsburgh is also in a three-way battle for the two wild-card spots in the East and this is a win for the taking as long as they don’t take it for granted. The Penguins have also defeated the Blackhawks in two of their last three contests, both by two goals or more.

Let’s take a look at a few trends heading into this one to give us the shot of courage we need to lay the 1.5 goals and pay a pricey vig as well on Pittsburgh.

  • Penguins are 4-1 in their last 5 home games.
  • Penguins are 18-6 in their last 24 vs. Western Conference.
  • Penguins are 39-14 in their last 53 vs. Central.
  • Penguins are 38-14 in their last 52 vs. a team with a winning % below .400

Seattle Kraken vs. Vegas Golden Knights

Tuesday, April 11, 2023 - 10:00 PM EDT at T-Mobile Arena

The Kraken has come alive at the right time, winning five straight, and muscling their way into the postseason with at least a wild-card berth. In their latest effort, Seattle secured a 4-1 decision over the lowly Coyotes in the desert last night.

The Knights are at the top of the Pacific but a division title is still not certain even though only two games remain on their regular season slate. Vegas last played on Saturday when they fell to the Stars in Dallas by the score of 2-1 in a shootout.

Seattle may be playing well but they are on the second leg of back-to-backs and what makes the challenge in front of them even more daunting is that they must face off against one of the very best in the West in hostile territory.

The Knights defeated the Kraken, 5-2, in their first meeting in October but Seattle would return the favor to the tune of a 4-2 win six weeks later. Nevertheless, Vegas has won five of their last six against the Kraken and will be getting a golden opportunity to take advantage of what should be a team running on empty tonight.
