Los Angeles Angels vs. Seattle Mariners

Wednesday, April 05, 2023 – 04:10 PM EDT at T-Mobile Park

In search of their second road series win of the young season, the Los Angeles Angels will send ace Shohei Ohtani to the mound in Seattle for an afternoon matchup against Julio Rodriguez and the Mariners.

The Angels are chalked for this contest with most shops carrying them just below the -150 mark on the moneyline, and the 7-run total is priced to the ‘Over.’

  • Shohei Ohtani: 0-0, 0.00
  • Chris Flexen: 0-0, 2.25

Flexen Joins M’s Rotation for Injured Ray

Ohtani tossed six shutout innings and struck out 10 on Opening Day at Oakland, but his only reward was a no-decision as the Angels – who closed around -200 at the best sportsbooks – ultimately fell 2-1 to the A’s. The 2-way star absolutely dominated the Mariners last season on the mound, allowing just 1 earned run across three starts and 19 innings while striking out 22. (prior to series 15-72, 5 HR hitting at T-Mobile Park.)

Flexen’s season debut last Friday was a long relief outing, logging the final four innings of a 9-4 loss to Cleveland. Robbie Ray started for Seattle and left with an elbow injury that will keep him sidelined for at least a few weeks.

A 14th-round pick by the Mets 11 years ago, Flexen faced the Mariners four times a year ago, three of those outings as a starter. He owns a 3.53 ERA in 163 innings at T-Mobile since joining the Mariners.

Sluggers Prevail in First 2 Games of Series

Ohtani and the Angels did the mashing in Monday’s opener for a 7-3 win and the Mariners came right back with a home run display in Tuesday’s 11-3 final to leave this series knotted heading into Tuesday’s tilt.

Pat Hoberg should be behind the dish for the umpire crew and got his 2023 started last weekend with an ‘Over’ winner after going 12-19-1 O/U/P a season ago. It’ll be a bit cool with temp in the low-50s at game time, but the roof should be open with a light SSW breeze (out to center).

Seattle sluggers found a groove on Tuesday, and while they won’t bang on Ohtani as much, the Mariners get the call here as the free MLB pick for the first half of this parlay play.

Parlay Pick: Mariners ML (+135)

Toronto Blue Jays vs. Kansas City Royals

Wednesday, April 05, 2023 – 07:40 PM EDT at Kauffman Stadium

Yet another series headed towards a rubber game, it’s the proverbial collision on the mound between youth and grizzled veteran when the Toronto Blue Jays close out their visit with the Kansas City Royals.

  • Alek Manoah: 0-0. 13.50
  • Zack Greinke: 0-1, 3.38

Totals Split in First 2 Games

It’s the youngster Manoah drawing respect from the oddsmakers with BAS posting the Blue Jays -175 on the morning moneyline. After the series opener on Monday went past an 8-run total and Tuesday’s tilt stayed well below a 10-run mark, Wednesday’s scoreboard target is 9.

Can Greinke Get Any Run Support?

Staked to an early lead in St. Louis on Opening Day, Manoah couldn’t make it through the fourth inning as Cardinal hitters raked for 9 hits and a couple of homers. In 3 career starts against the Royals – 1 in KC – the big righty has worked 19 innings and allowed just 1 run.

In what could become a regular occurrence for Greinke this season, he pitched well (5.1 IP, 2 ER) against the Twins on Opening Day but didn’t get any support in a 2-0 loss to Minnesota. Greinke and the Royals closed as +145 underdogs on the MLB odds.

Greinke didn’t pitch all that well in a loss at Toronto last season but had generally been tough on the Blue Jays before that outing at Rogers Centre. George Springer (.538, HR) and Whit Merrifield (.455, HR) have been tough outs for Greinke over the years.

Umpire Notes, Mother Nature & a Free Pick

Tripp Gibson draws the plate assignment for the series finale, and he’s off an ‘Under’ winner in his first game of the season. The weatherman is forecasting a crisp evening in America’s heartland with the thermometer stuck in the upper-40s for most of the contest under clear skies.

Those cool temps should bother the hitters more than the pitchers, and I like the underdog Royals for my second MLB pick in this parlay.

Parlay Pick: Royals ML (+160)
