A Chance for Redemption

I think there is every chance that Tommy Fleetwood plays very well in Scotland this year, and peaks a little too soon like he did in Canada, a month ago. On that occasion, the popular Englishman lost a play-off for the Canadian Open to Nick Taylor, and in truth, Fleetwood had an extremely good opportunity to win his first PGA Tour title over the final holes before the play-off.

Not only did that cost him the Canadian Open title but it left him on a downer the week after at the U.S. Open, when an opening round of 73, left him too much to do. Despite showing his recent good form for the final three rounds and a final round of 63, the thirty-two-year-old could only finish fifth.

Obviously, that was another strong performance from Fleetwood but the frustrating wait for a first PGA Tour title goes on. This week in Scotland, Fleetwood will be tuning up for the Open Championship next week which is being played in his local community. We know that he loves the Renaissance track with a 4th place finish last year and a runner-up placing in 2020 to illustrate his growing affinity.

Remember, the Canadian Open was a tune-up for the U.S. Open, so I expect Fleetwood to feel less pressure in the same scenario this week. Could the Scottish Open be his first PGA Tour title? No matter what the weather conditions are this week, I suggest backing Tommy Fleetwood who will cope with either, amongst your best golf bets at our top U.S. betting sites.

2023 Genesis Scottish Open

July 13 – July 16, 2023 at The Renaissance Club

Weather Forecast

The weather has been unsettled in Scotland in the lead-up and doesn’t expect perfect conditions which will suit the home contingent of players

Course Stats

  • Renaissance Club, North Berwick
  • Par 70, 7237 yards
  • Designed by Tom Doak
  • Not your typical seaside link despite its location as it is carved out of 300 acres of pine forest and Tom Doak decided to leave some tree foliage in.
  • The main defense of the course is the elements with it being close to the sea.
  • Set on prime immaculate red fescue grass, the best surface in Scotland.

Former Champions at Renaissance

Top Betting Contenders

Scottie Scheffler (+650)

The ultra-consistent world number one heads over to Berwick in superb form tee-to-green but looking poor value in the win market.

Rory McIlroy (+800)

Great to have the Northern Irishman entered here and this course setup could be perfect for him with it not being a classical link.

Xander Schauffele (+1600)

The defending champion, Xander Schauffele arrives here in Scotland not quite in the form of a year ago but is hugely respected.

Viktor Hovland (+1800)

The Norwegian looks like a major champion in waiting and like McIlroy this venue not being a classical link could be perfect for Hovland.

Jordan Spieth (+2200)

Former Open champion Jordan Spieth is always a factor at this time of year with his creative short game ideally suited to seaside golf in the United Kingdom.

Min Woo Lee (+3500)

The 2021 champion arrives here winless but making relentless progress up the world rankings with some of the highest-quality ball striking in the biggest events. It would not surprise me if Min Woo Lee contends this week or next.

Max Homa (+4000)

Max Homa showed up well last year at the course with a top 20 finish and seemed to enjoy the trip over. Could be a dark horse this week if he gets in contention.

Wyndham Clark (+4000)

The US Open champion has a solid look this week in the Scottish Open, having acclimatized well to golf at the course a year ago when finishing 16th.

Links Specialists and Home Challenge

Tyrrell Hatton (+1800)

Super consistent over on the PGA Tour this season without winning and is a player of great interest this week in familiar conditions, but may be of more interest next week in the Open.

Shane Lowry (+3500)

If the weather forecast remains unsettled, Shane Lowry could be contending this week at the Renaissance. Week after week his stone-cold putter lets him down but when par is at its hardest in difficult conditions, Shane Lowry can be the man.
