Both teams involved in Sunday’s Group H meeting between Croatia and Russia are vying for their security into the playoff rounds of the World Cup 2022. A drawn fixture for Russia is enough to secure their qualification.
Still, it’s Croatia who’ll be battling to become the winners of Group H – should they prevail in this highly-anticipated game. The reverse fixture in Russia was very telling. Despite resulting in a bore draw (0-0), Croatia was dominant in both possession and attacking statistics. With that said, we should expect high confidence from both squads, with them both returning to action from mid-week winning results.
It was nothing less than wasteful shooting that prevented the Croatians from shutting out Russia during the first encounter, but since this result, their goal-scoring drought has entirely flipped. Seven goals flew past Malta in Croatia’s midweek game, and they’ve scored at least two goals in all of their meetings since the first clash with Russia.
Final Thoughts
Russia’s form hasn’t been pitiful; in fact, their WCQ campaign has delivered just one loss when traveling to Slovakia. My cause for concern is knowing the Russian’s need one point to qualify, which could lead them to hold back against Croatia.

Whilst the German squad is plagued with COVID-19, their WCQ results weren’t affected with a staggering 9-0 win over Liechtenstein on Wednesday. At the opposite end of Sunday’s upcoming fixture, Armenia was handed a brutal 5-0 defeat, ending their Qatar World Cup qualification.
Technically, they can still qualify, but that would require an 18-goal victory versus Germany – which isn’t going to happen, ever, in a lifetime of World Cup meetings.
Germany has already earned their position into the World Cup playoffs, and the starting eleven won’t be fielding the familiar names we’re used to. However, Germany’s B-side has enough class and quality to outperform this Armenian squad. Nobody expected a 9-0 scoreline midweek, and Germany had also made qualification heading into that fixture.
The reverse meeting witnessed a 6-0 win in Germany, and we should expect a similar goal tally for Hansi Flick and his German team, who’ve dominated Group J from top to bottom.
