As the follow-up to the most popular horse race in America, the Preakness Stakes draws less attention despite delivering equal drama and tension. It’s a touch shorter than the Kentucky Derby at 9.5 furlongs, and for the first time in the race’s history, it will take place at Laurel Park while the traditional Pimlico Race Course undergoes renovations.
There will be no Triple Crown attempt at this year’s race. Golden Tempo, the winner of the Kentucky Derby, withdrew last week. That doesn’t mean there’s not an abundance of talent in this field, though.

Iron Honor was the morning line favorite when the 14-horse field was drawn on Monday, but Incredibolt is the top colt at a fixed +400 tag. Other top contenders include Iron Honor, Taj Mahal, Chip Honcho, and Ocelli, who finished third at the Kentucky Derby as a 70-1 longshot.
Betting Favorites to Win 2026 Preakness Stakes
With a few days to go until the race, these are the horses that are largely expected to be in the running for first.
Incredibolt (+400)
After finishing sixth at the Kentucky Derby on May 2, Incredibolt has emerged as one of the premier candidates to win the Preakness Stakes. Inconsistency has been the issue for this Colt – he’s finished either first or sixth in each of his last five races – but when he’s on, he’s on.
Despite the quick turnaround time between the two races, reports indicate that Incredibolt is healthy and ready to roll at Laurel Park. His trainers feel good about his chances against this field and believe his performance at Churchill Downs didn’t showcase his full potential.
Iron Honor (+500)
An extremely limited sample size makes Iron Honor a tough horse to project – something that both works in his favor and could be counted against him. In late February, he won the Gotham Stakes at the Aqueduct Racetrack. About a month later, he came in seventh at the Wood Memorial Stakes. Save for a win in his maiden race, that’s all we have to go off of.
His trainer believes skipping over the Kentucky Derby was the right move, allowing Iron Honor to get additional rest in the weeks leading up to the Preakness. With full attention set on winning at Laurel Park, he’ll have fresh legs and a shot at redemption after disappointing in his last start.
2026 Preakness Stakes Sleeper Picks
The sleeper category is where we start to find some value. There’s plenty to like about the horses in this range, even if they don’t quite have the edge on some of the favorites.
Taj Mahal (+525)
There’s a good chance that Taj Mahal moves up the board between now and race start, and he’s someone I’m watching to eventually become the betting favorite. On top of being undefeated, Taj Mahal has only raced at Laurel Park, so he should feel right at home for the Preakness.
Taj Mahal drew post one for the Preakness – a spot that trainer Brittany Russell admittedly did not want –, but he has the speed and stamina to overcome the position. Should Taj Mahal be the first to cross the line, Russell would become the first female trainer to win the Preakness Stakes.
Ocelli (+575)
Ocelli came out of nowhere and finished in the money at the Kentucky Derby as a 70-1 longshot. Now considered to be one of the top contenders at the Preakness Stakes, Ocelli is riding the momentum to what could potentially be his first career win.
The 3-year-old colt has seven starts to his name, with five finishes in the money and two sixth-place results. He’s never topped second place, but this is as good an opportunity as any to prove that his surprising effort at Churchill Downs wasn’t a fluke.
2026 Preakness Stakes Longshot Picks
This is where the fun begins. Longshots mean big payouts, and horse racing is as unpredictable as it gets. Should you go this route, there are a few horses to favor over the others.
Great White (+1500)
Great White was all set to compete in the Kentucky Derby a few weeks ago, but a fall on his way to the starting gate ultimately forced him out of the field. Now, it’s about turning that disappointment into redemption at Laurel Park.
Great White is a massive horse, and his biggest win came in mid-February at the John Battaglia Memorial Stakes. We’ve yet to see how he’ll handle such a long dirt track, but his recent form suggests that he could be up near the front of the pack when the time calls for it.
The Hell We Did (+2200)
People have a lot of different reasons for backing a particular horse in the Triple Crown races. There’s the logical side, which considers recent results, speed, and other quantifiable factors. There’s also the side that gravitates toward certain contenders on name alone, and that’s where I stand with The Hell We Did.
The Hell We Did does have a solid profile too, which makes for a compelling case at +2200. In a race that took him just over a mile around the dirt track at Keeneland, he finished a close second to Trendsetter in the Lexington Stakes.

Taj Mahal is undoubtedly my top bet at +525. He has everything going in his favor despite being a relatively distant third to Incredibolt, and it would not surprise me one bit if bettors eventually make him the favorite leading up to the start of the race. He has the speed and experience necessary to take this one.
If you’re looking for a true longshot, Great White is worth a look at +1500. The late scratch at the Kentucky Derby may turn out to be a blessing in disguise since he won’t be nearly as fatigued as other runners that made their way around Churchill Downs two weeks ago.
