Philadelphia Phillies vs. Los Angeles Dodgers

Friday, May 13, 2022 – 10:10 PM EDT at Dodger Stadium

Phillies vs. Dodgers Betting Analysis

Three times this season, the Los Angeles Dodgers have dropped consecutive games. Los Angeles finds itself in the middle of one of those 2-game skids heading into the weekend, and the Dodgers will turn to a trusty old veteran to end it on Friday’s MLB betting card against the Philadelphia Phillies.

Scratching and clawing their way back towards the .500 mark, Philadelphia will in turn take aim at a third consecutive win in an effort to keep pace with the New York Mets in the NL East. Los Angeles is tied with those Mets for the best record in the National League and clinging to a 1-game lead in the NL West.

If the numbers at the oddsmakers are any indication, the Dodgers won’t drop a third-straight contest. Clayton Kershaw (4-0, 1.80) is next up in Dave Roberts’ rotation, and L.A. is favored on a -210 to -220 moneyline. Kyle Gibson (3-1, 2.94) starts for Philadelphia with a 7½-run total.

Bryce Haper Injury Update

If the series opener on Thursday is any indication, the two lineups will easily breach that scoreboard target. Philadelphia built a 7-1 lead and then held off a late Los Angeles rally effort for a 9-7 victory. Early homers from Bryce Harper and Johan Camargo proved too much for the Dodgers to overcome.

Harper was at DH for Philadelphia and will be again on Friday after suffering a torn UCL in his right elbow. He is not expected to play defense for at least the next four weeks, and Phillies skipper Joe Girardi said Harper is likely to sit out the Saturday and Sunday games of this series.

Los Angeles won four of the six games between the rivals last season – and nine of the last 13 meetings – before Philadelphia got the dubya on Thursday. The ‘under’ cashed in five-straight clashes at Dodger Stadium prior to Thursday’s offensive outburst.

Kyle Gibson Analysis

After coming over from Texas in a deadline deal last July, Gibson didn’t give the Phillies the lift in the rotation he was expected to by pitching to a 5.09 ERA and the team dropping five of his six final starts. The veteran right-hander has put that behind him early in 2022, and effectively become the ace of the Philadelphia staff.

Philadelphia won his last three outings, the most recent two of which came against the NL East-leading New York Mets. Gibson pulled off a nice payday this past Sunday as a +140 underdog at BetOnline, tossing six innings in a 3-2 Phillies win over New York and its ace, Max Scherzer.

Clayton Kershaw Analysis

Delayed about a week to begin 2022, Kershaw has pitched the Dodgers to the right side of the MLB scores in four of his five starts. The veteran lefty tossed the first seven innings of a 7-0 blank job at Wrigley last Saturday, allowing the Cubs just five hits among his 81 pitches.

Kershaw didn’t get any support in his lone assignment versus the Phillies last season, working six innings in L.A. and striking out nine in a 2-0 Philadelphia triumph. That was his first time to face the Phillies since 2019 when Kershaw enjoyed two quality starts against them, tossing 13 combined innings and allowing just one earned run in a pair of L.A. victories.

How to Bet on Phillies vs. Dodgers?

Game 2 will find crew chief Paul Emmel calling balls and strikes. Absent from major league diamonds the past two years due to surgery on both legs, the Michigan native is making his seventh plate assignment of 2022 and has a 1-4-1 O/U/P record. His last two games at the Chavez Ravine dish went ‘over’ at BMR's top-rated sportsbooks

One of Gibson’s worst starts after being dealt with Philadelphia last season came against these Dodgers, who roughed him up for six runs before chasing him in the fifth inning. He certainly will not overpower the Los Angeles hitters and has to be on top of his game by coaxing ground balls to pull off the upset.

I don’t see that happening, and on a Friday the 13th when temps are expected to climb into the upper-80s, the ball should be flying around Chavez Ravine - especially off the L.A. bats – I’ll happily take the ‘over’ and the Dodgers for a double-dip of free baseball picks
