Blake Snell of the Giants is the reigning NL Cy Young Award winner and is rounding to form after a belated season debut. However, he seems overpriced here and we are backing JP Sears and the pesky Athletics as nice home underdogs.
Not Much Run Support
Keep in mind that we have nothing against Snell, as the main reason we are fading him is we see value on the other side at what we feel is an inflated price for a bad road team. After all, he has had three scoreless outings in his last four starts and is three starts removed from pitching a no-hitter. Yet, in those three scoreless efforts, the no-no was his only win which speaks volumes about how bad the Giants’ offense has been.
That does not figure to change today either against a mound opponent that is also in great form. And besides, Snell’s overall 3.91 ERA is a far cry from his 2.25 ERA last year when winning the Cy Young, and he continues to have some command issues with his walk rate an unsightly 3.65/9.
And let us not forget that the Giants are just 26-35 on the road after a 2-0 loss here yesterday.
Dominated Giants Last Time
Sears has a winning 10-8 record for a team that is 17 games under .500, although he does have a 4.32 ERA and 4.79 xFIP. However, he has gotten better as the season has gone on and may now be in the best form of his three-year Major League career.
JP has allowed a grand total of four runs in 21 innings over his last three starts. This streak began with a dominant effort against these Giants on July 30th where he tossed seven scoreless innings allowing just three hits with an impressive nine strikeouts. Sears now throws his slider more than any other pitch at 36.3%, and that has been a shrewd adjustment as it is rated a hefty 128 on Stiff+.
The A’s have also become quite pesky as the season has gone on as they are now 7-4 in their last 11 games.
This is a matchup of two pitchers in hot current form, making this price seem very high. Back the Athletics as large home underdogs on Sunday.
