After defeating every UFC middleweight competitor put in front of him since 2014, Israel Adesanya has been the lone kryptonite of Whittaker’s career trajectory.
In the previous eight years, the 185lb champion, who dethroned Robert Whittaker, has been the only fighter to overcome the New Zealand native's diverse skillset. And in an attempt to reclaim the gold earlier this year, “The Reaper” suffered his second loss to “Stylebender”.
New Zealand's first UFC champion, Robert Whittaker, would potentially be the pound-for-pound No.1 ranked fighter should he have never crossed paths with Adesanya.
Unfortunately, he’s now in an awkward position where obtaining another title opportunity will be extremely challenging, despite being the second-best middleweight on the planet.
Prior to his unanimous decision loss to Adesanya in February, Whittaker had cleaned up in the middleweight division, defeating some of the most notable names in the sport:
- Darren Till
- Jared Cannonier
- Kelvin Gastelum
- Yoel Romero
- Ronaldo Souza
- Derek Brunson
- Pro MMA Record: (18-4-1) (8 KOs, 1 submission)
- Age: 28
- Height: 6'0"
- Reach: 74.0"
- Training Out Of: MMA Masters
- Origin Fighting Style: Kickboxing
Since making his UFC debut in 2016, “The Italian Dream,” Marvin Vettori has kept himself extremely busy inside the octagon. Competing on twelve occasions since his beginnings with the company aged 22, he’s gained some of the most valuable experience a fighter could ask for.
Like his weekend opponent, Vettori had no answers for Israel Adesanya, but he has answers for anybody attempting to finish him inside the cage. In twenty-three professional contests dating back to his MMA debut in 2013, nobody has succeeded in ending the Italian via submission or knockout.
Most notably, Vettori is known for his dedication to training, beginning with a kickboxing trial aged 13; as Vettori grew a closer interest in mixed martial arts, he trained with several different gyms just to level up his skillset.
Now training with Kings MMA in California, he needn’t worry about the lengthy journeys, but that same dedication goes to work six days out of seven with morning and afternoon workouts.
UFC FN Paris: Whittaker vs. Vettori Breakdown and Analysis
Whittaker Fight Style and How Can Whittaker Beat Vettori?
Both Whittaker and Marvin Vettori have become accustomed to the main event's five-round bouts, but this weekend in Paris will provide just fifteen minutes of action. This could provide a more aggressive nature from both men, but Whittaker will be conscious of his opponent’s robust durability.
Whittaker has proven time and time again that he’s one of the most well-rounded fighters in the UFC, his striking and grappling skills have assisted him in victory, and I believe he’ll own the advantage in both areas this weekend.
I believe Whittaker’s best chance of success is implementing takedowns and avoiding a potential knockout scenario. However, Whittaker has it all, he won’t be easily taken down, and his boxing fundamentals, in combination with his light-footed karate style, can dictate the striking numbers for all three rounds.
Vettori Fight Style and How Can Vettori Beat Whittaker?
Vettori’s hunger to be the best is his best weapon. Top-notch nutrition and a dedication to the sport are why he’s one of the top-ranked fights at 185lbs.
That said, and although I believe “The Italian Dream” can defeat most on comers in the top-ten rankings, it’s challenging to visualize a viable path to victory for Vettori outside of catching Whittaker with some powerful counterstrikes.
Robert Whittaker vs. Marvin Vettori Betting Picks and UFC Paris Odds
The available odds at top-rated sportsbooks aren’t entirely sold on Whittaker, and we can find value in the New Zealander's moneyline pricing.
Alternatively, you can bet Whittaker to win by decision, boosting the available odds slightly closer to plus-money. I am, however, understanding towards bettors who want to play it safe and wager the straight moneyline.
