Florida Panthers vs. New York Rangers

Monday, January 23, 2023 – 07:00 PM EST at Madison Square Garden

Panthers on the Prowl

The Panthers are 4-1 over their last five and have scored an average of 4.6 goals per game over that span. After dispatching the lowly Canadiens, 6-2, on Thursday night, the Panthers flew south to Sunrise, Florida to welcome the Minnesota Wild.

Anton Lundell notched his 7th goal of the year late in the opening stanza to draw first blood and that was followed by an Eetu Luostarinen tally early in the second period to make it 2-0. After the Wild cut the lead in half, Carter Verhaeghe would bury the biscuit on the power play for his 22nd of the season. Gustav Forsling would score in the third while Sam Reinhart would put the game on ice with an empty-netter.

Despite being outshot, 32-27, Florida would secure a 5-3 victory but two of Minnesota’s goals came via the power play as the Panthers gave the Wild plenty of man-advantage situations with 19 penalty minutes to just 9 for Minnesota.

Florida goalie, Alex Lyon, turned aside 29 shots and was awarded the No. 2 star while defenseman Gustav Forsling would cop the game’s No. 1 star. The Panthers’ starting goaltender, Sergei Bobrovsky, suffered an injury in Montreal and Lyon came on in relief due to the primary backup and 13th overall pick in the 2019 NHL Draft, Spencer Knight, in the midst of a conditioning stint at the team’s AHL affiliate.

''These are the kind of games you play for. We just had so many guys digging in,'' Lyon said. ''There were massive points on the line. This is fun and where you test your true mettle. I enjoyed it.''

Rangers Bow to Bruins

The Rangers welcomed the league’s hottest team to MSG on Thursday night after handing Columbus a 3-1 loss three nights earlier. But the tables would turn as the Bruins returned the favor and skated out with a 3-1 victory. Ben Harpu prevented the shutout when he lit the lamp late in the final frame.

New York outshot Boston, 32-27, but they ran into a buzzsaw in the form of B’s backup netminder, Jeremy Swayman who made 31 saves and was awarded the game’s No. 1 star.

“It’s a tough building to play in and a great building to play in.″ Bruins’ captain Patrice Bergeron said about visiting the iconic Madison Square Garden. "The fans are always into it. So, when you get that lead, it gives you confidence. And Sway kept us in the game a few times."

Panthers vs. Rangers: Pick and Prediction

The Panthers have been clicking on all cylinders offensively lately and although the Rangers are a stingy defensive team, ranked 5th in allowing 2.6 goals per game, they do not own a great deal of offensive firepower, currently ranked 18th in scoring.

We should also point out that the Rangers will have an advantage in the net with Igor Shesterkin patrolling the crease. But the 27-year-old has not been the steel curtain he was last year when he ended with a 2.07 goals against average, a .935 save percentage, and the Vezina Trophy on his mantle. This year Shesterkin is 20-8 with a 2.45 GAA and a .917 save percentage. Good? Sure. Otherworldly? No.

The Panthers are the pick here because they have been on a tear recently and will control the pace and tempo of this game. Florida has an immaculate transition offense and they will get their fair share of 2-on-1s in this one and will continue their winning ways when the final buzzer sounds.

Let’s grab the juice and watch this game go high.
