FanDuel Partners With Canadian WNBA Expansion Franchise

FanDuel recently added to its many partnerships by announcing a multi-year agreement with the WNBA’s newest entry, the Toronto Tempo. This deal will allow FanDuel to market to a growing women’s professional basketball fanbase north of the border.

FanDuel Increases the Tempo

FanDuel revealed Tuesday that it has signed on as the first Canadian iGaming partner of the WNBA’s newest franchise, the Toronto Tempo. The team, which was established in December, is set to make its debut on May 8th when it tips off against the Washington Mystics on opening day.

“Partnering with the Toronto Tempo in their inaugural season is an exciting opportunity for FanDuel customers and basketball fans,” said Tom Burdakin, FanDuel’s vice president of marketing, in a release. “As a company that shares the same passion for community and empowering women’s sports, we are proud to support a new franchise that will celebrate fans and elevate women’s professional sports in Canada.”

This deal adds to FanDuel’s growing involvement in both Canadian markets and women’s sports. As part of the partnership, fans can expect new interactive experiences and promotions tied to the team and the platform.
The timing lines up with a surge in WNBA popularity. Last season drew record-breaking viewership, including a 6% increase in ESPN audiences compared to the previous season, boasting an average of 1.3 million viewers per game. The brand will reach a younger audience, with the under-18 demographic revealing a marked year-over-year increase.

With both sports betting and women’s basketball gaining momentum, the collaboration combines two flourishing markets. The partnership is expected to create a more immersive experience, which will include special promotions, fan-focused events, and access to the team’s digital platform.

The FanDuel brand will now be prominently visible throughout the Tempo’s home stadium, the Coca-Cola Coliseum in Toronto, as well as at showcase events throughout Canada, including the Scotiabank Arena (Toronto), the Bell Centre (Montreal), and Rogers Arena (Vancouver).

This recently announced deal augments FanDuel’s Canadian affiliations, as the brand company already has a solid footprint in Canada, having secured partnerships with the NHL’s Toronto Maple Leafs and the NBA’s Toronto Raptors. 

Its support for women’s sports has been building as well. FanDuel has worked with the WNBA since 2022 and expanded into women’s hockey in 2024 through a partnership with the Professional Women’s Hockey League.

On the broadcast side, it also teamed up with The Sports Network (TSN), Canada’s leading English-language sports broadcasting station. FanDuel is now TSN’s official sports betting partner, originating in Ontario and gradually extending its reach to other provinces. 

The Tempo will join the Portland Fire as the WNBA’s newest franchise beginning in 2026. It is the league’s first franchise outside of the United States, and tennis legend Serena Williams has joined the ownership group along with Kilmer Sports Ventures, led by Larry Tanenbaum.
