I have a very good friend I grew up with who is in the service industry. We are very close and he tells me anything I want to know. He has been the head of a service department for Honda , Toyota and Mercedes the last 28 years. I’ve asked him about this countless times. He has told me story after story. It’s all a big scam. They also do profiling on customers they know who they can screw more than others. It’s how they make their $. He even told me the dealership is not the place to take your car especially if it out of warranty. Warranty is ok. But hands down the service people are bigger scumbags than car salesmen but both are the worst of the worst.

I am sure there are some bad apples in the mix but a guy like Sam here at BMR seems like a good guy. Let's not color all car players with the same brush.

Funny. Everyone bitches about sales and service - but every 3 years same people are looking to buy the most feature laden piece of European badged engineering/

Only thing worse is the bloated US “luxury” brands - Cadillac/Lincoln that drop in value horribly. Trucks/SUV will be just as bad as oil spikes again.

Seriously thinking of dumping my truck and buying a low mileage 15 year old Silverado. No depreciation - limited technology - crank windows and all. I hate technology in vehicles - anything I buy I can at least do basic maintenance on myself.

No way in hell I will ever own a Tesla/Rivian. The more there is that can fail - the more that WILL fail. The wife’s Genesis is bad enough - but at least it has 2 years free maintenance in addition to warranty - and in 2 years she will be board and wanting some new shiny thing.

in general car salesman are the worst they will gut their own mother.but the service department makes them look like saints.

Tech (and sales) will run as far as YOU let them. Can’t blame someone else for your ignorance.

I used to have an office for work in a dealership - amazed me the stupidity these people put up with.

Regularly would see someone walk in - eye the most over priced beat to hell old Mercedes or ragged sports car/Chrysler 300 and start asking “how much are the payments” with their 530 score. Then complain they got “duped” into a huge payment a year later.

It’s simple - if you’re poor - buy what you can afford in cash - and learn to maintain it. Same people would beat shit to death.

With all the information online about services now, you only have yourself to blame if you don't research what is needed before you drive into a service department.

Don't forget that you can always say no if they recommend a repair to you.

May as well follow a tout with every one of your bets while you're at it.

I've always wondered about this... Are they actually doing the service.

I was marking the oil filter and tires to make sure it was changed out and the tires rotated. They always did the work so I stopped doing it but still go to the same place since I think they are being honest.

Now, we probably all get synthetic oil these days. I cannot tell if the oil they are using is actually synthetic or a cheaper version but, our cars are lasting 130k+ before we replace them without any issues.

Agree. Can't see going electric yet. Too many issues left to resolve on the technology (how far you can go on a charge, the cold weather impacting the battery in a big way, ....).

As far as buying new or used, we usually buy new but only if we get a decent deal. That's harder to come by until recently due to the covid issue and automakers holding back production to keep prices high.

I love bargaining at the dealership. The whole negotiation process I think is fun. Salemen, probably hate me since I never give in. They are back and forth to the sales mgr and of couse they always bring them out to try and seal the deal.

I've gotten up to walk out on them so many times my wife expects it every time. She always wonders how I can be such a prick to them.

I took my truck into a car repair shop to have a fan blower motor replaced. They checked the cabin air filter and said that needed to be replaced so I figured why not. They charged me $80 labor to replace it.

For those of you who don't know how to replace a cabin air filter in a Toyota truck, you just remove the glove box, lift a flap, pull the old filter out and put a new filter in. It takes less than 5 minutes.

I left a review on Yelp for this guy and he said he would return my labor cost. When I sent him a letter he refused because I used a pseudonym account to review him rather than my real name.

He said in his reply to my review about how car repair places use the Mitchell Book that tells repair shops how much to charge for each repair. The whole industry is a racket.

I've had repair places charge me $80 just to check my battery. I had one repair place charge me to change my air filter and the one I had in there was only a few months old. Make sure you ask ahead of time how much something is going to cost before you agree to have the service done.

i always wondered too , do they actually do the work, these labor fees are crazy, went in for an oil change and tire rotation end up being 4 hours and 1060 dollar bill

Sammy is a good guy

I would trust him

now the other night I was talking to him on the phone he knows I have no cash and I almost through DocuSign bought a jeep for 77,000 he was that smooth
Yeah, I would definitely trust Sammy and his service guys for the cars that they sell. I feel like even more now a lot of mechanics since the pandemic are out there indulging in some sort of scam to offset their upgraded costs.
