UFC 270 was an absolutely amazing card from top to bottom with two belts on the line. This week, I want to highlight the main event because it was a fight so many people were looking forward to. Read below for my recap of Francis Ngannou vs. Ciryl Gane.
Francis Ngannou vs. Ciryl Gane
UFC Heavyweight Championship
Coming into this bout, I was 50/50, and I was 50/50 ever since the fight was announced. Both fighters have their own elite skills, and I was quite shocked, yet happy, with the results – this is how it went.
The Champ entered the fight with UFC Odds priced at +115, and Ciryl Gane priced at -140 at your Top Sportsbooks.
In the first round, Gane broke out light on his feet and brought the fight to an immediate clinch. But Ngannou was applying pressure; he pressed forward and landed some body shots and Gane counters. They both exchange some combos; some knees, kicks, and jabs. Ngannou then clinched and aimed for a takedown, but Gane landed some knees to the body. You could say Gane looked sharper than Ngannou in that round.
The second round began and Gane was full of movement and energy. Gane was landing some great strikes to the body and implemented some leg kicks; Ngannou was simply absorbing. Ngannou then threw a wide punch and missed; they clinched up but Gane then separated. Gane was sharp this round; he implemented body kicks, he landed a wheel kick to the head, and ended the round with a short right. Ngannou threw an uppercut but missed. Ngannou had to pick up the pace.
Now we enter the third round; Ngannou appeared to be hungrier than the last two rounds. And in fact he did because he shocked the whole crowd. Gane feinted, and Ngannou slipped in and slammed Gane to the ground. Keep in mind, this was Ganes first time being taken down. Gane soon got up, and then end up back in the clinch along the cage. They were exchanging kicks; Gane landed a head kick and Ngannou secured another takedown. Talk about excitement in this round.
As we entered the fourth round, I was questioning whether or not this will be finished inside the distance or not! Gane started this round with a body kick, then leg kick. Ngannou countered with punches to the body. Gane landed a spinning body kick, but Ngannou absorbs it to bring the fight to the ground yet again. Gane was trying to get control and get to his feet, but Ngannou brought him down again. Ngannou was now in full control on the ground and even landed a knee to the chest. Talk about SCARY.
Now, the final round. You could see Ngannou’s confidence grow after that fourth round. He landed a heavy right hand, but Gane now brought Ngannou to the ground!! Ngannou then escaped, but then Gane went for the heel hook!! Ngannou escaped again and is now on top! Both are scrambling, and now the horn!!
Francis Ngannou defended his title, defeating Ciryl Gane by unanimous decision.
Closing Remarks and What’s Next?
The second title bout was in the co-main event, Deiveison Figueiredo vs. Brandon Moreno. Moreno was defending his title for the first time against Figueiredo, who he originally stripped the title from. But unfortunately, Moreno lost his title Saturday night and Deiveison Figueiredo is the UFC Flyweight Champion once again!
Now let’s give a shoutout to all of our dog-winners in UFC 270: Jasmin Jasudavisius (+175), Victor Henry (+365), Deiveison Figueiredo (+150), and Francis Ngannou (+115).
Up next in the UFC, we have UFC Vegas 47: Jack Hermansson vs. Sean Strickland on Saturday, February 5, 2022 at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas.
