Francis Ngannou vs. Ciryl Gane

UFC 270 Heavyweight Championship Main Event Bout

Saturday, January 22, 2022 – 10:00 PM EST at Honda Center

Francis Ngannou (16-3-0)

Nineteen fights into his professional MMA career, and Francis Ngannou has become the most feared knockout artist in the sport's history. A feat of power behind his fists has been scientifically measured to equal the force of a Ford Escort driving at 40mph.

Six years spent competing for the UFC has provided fight fans with ten knockout finishes, a heavyweight championship title, and a name that’s now synonymous to heavyweight legends of past and present. Ngannou’s African heritage saw him become the first-ever Cameroon-born UFC titleholder, and his die-hard fans have eagerly anticipated his first title defense.

Before Ngannou’s title-winning rematch versus Stipe Miocic, critics found it difficult to judge his longevity inside the cage due to a fighting history filled with ultra-fast finishes. However, when presenting the evidence of his MMA evolution by sprawling Stipe’s takedown attempts and delivering a more technical style that was concluded by a round-two knockout, Ngannou’s unruly power has become more intimidating than ever.

Francis Ngannou MMA Accomplishments

  • UFC Heavyweight Championship (One time, current)
  • UFC Performance of the Night (Six times)
  • First Cameroon-born UFC champion

Ciryl Gane (10-0-0)

Following a decorated and undefeated Muay Thai career, the exceptional striking skills of Ciryl Gane were put to the test inside an MMA cage. Three years later, Gane’s undefeated combat sports record has remained intact, and the French-born fighter has successfully captured the most prestigious championship in all mixed martial arts.

When signing for the UFC in 2019, many expected great things from Gane, but nobody could’ve predicted a 7-fight win streak and a TKO stoppage over Derrick Lewis to capture the interim heavyweight strap.

Having faced the man with more knockouts in UFC heavyweight history than anybody, Gane is now pitted against another striker with devastating consequences behind his striking offense. Adding intrigue to the contest, Gane and Ngannou are former training partners, assisting this heavyweight championship bout into becoming the most highly anticipated fight of all time.

Ciryl Gane MMA Accomplishments

  • UFC Interim Heavyweight Champion (One time, current)
  • UFC Performance of the Night (Two times)
  • TKO World Heavyweight Champion (One time)
  • Academie Francaise de Muay Thai – AFMT National 201lbs Champion (One time, one defense)

Ngannou Fight Style and How Can Ngannou Defeat Gane?

There’s no denying that Ngannou’s lack of technical ability has advanced throughout his time spent on the UFC roster. Initially criticized for having nothing but power, the heavyweight champ has steadily leveled up his footwork, patience, and shot delivery under the tutelage of Eric Nicksick and Dewey Cooper.

With that said, the most viable game plan for next weekend's main event should involve a revisit of past approaches. Throw the technical game out of the window, walk down Gane, and throw the winging shots in the hope of landing one. Engagement in a striking standoff or technical battle with Gane isn’t going to favor the Cameroonian, as he’s facing a man with significantly more experience in this realm.

Gane Fight Style and How Can Gane Defeat Ngannou?

Gane shocked the world when he nullified the fight-ending power of Derrick Lewis in an interim title fight that was an idealistic warm-up for the lights-out punching capability of Ngannou.

Slick footwork and light-footed movement behind a striking offense that excels perfectly on the outside will keep Ngannou working and frustrated. Realistically, Gane’s style, size, and speed are the perfect counteraction for Ngannou’s usual winning approach.

UFC 270: Francis Ngannou vs. Ciryl Gane Prediction

The available odds at Bookmakers Review opened with Ngannou as a staggering -190 favorite. These disrespectful odds on the interim champion have capsized into the Frenchman becoming the betting favorite, and rightfully so.

Of course, it only takes one, and one clean strike from Ngannou would compromise any human on the planet. However, I expect Gane’s defensive movement, potential grappling approach, and fight intelligence to overcome the power factor he’ll be presented with.
