Let’s see what the MLB odds for this matchup tell us!

New York Mets vs. Philadelphia Phillies

Who Will Be the Starting Pitcher for Philly?

The New York Mets still haven’t lost a series this season, after splitting with the Atlanta Braves over the week.

After playing a four-game series against the Braves, the Mets will now head out on the road and take on the Philadelphia Phillies for a four-game series.

Aaron Nola will take the hill for the Phillies. Nola is on the cusp of being an ace but has also allowed multiple runs in every game but one this season.

The Mets have scored three runs against Nola in both of his starts against the Mets this season. Despite Nola’s inconsistencies, he still has a 3.12 xFIP with 31.8% strikeouts and 4.7% walks.

The Mets just kind of have his number. Nola is inducing 56.9% ground balls and limiting line drives to 10.8%. He’s been phenomenal analytically.

Meanwhile, the Mets’ projected lineup has a wOBA of .315 with an ISO of .114.

Who Do the Righties Have To Take Care of This Season?

Righties should offensively lookout for these Mets' players this season:

  • Brandon Nimmo
  • Francisco Lindor
  • Pete Alonso
  • Jeff McNeil

On the other hand, Taijuan Walker has thrown seven innings this season and has allowed no runs. All seven of those innings came against the Phillies.

He’s induced nine ground balls and allowed seven fly balls with five strikeouts and two walks. The Phillies’ top half of the order can rake but the bottom half can be considered rally killers.

Do Phillies Are Looking Good?

The Phillies still have a .156 ISO and wOBA of .316 but strike out 21% of the time.

The only four batters that can look good on paper include:

  • Kyle Schwarber
  • Alec Bohm
  • Bryce Harper
  • Nick Castellanos

If those guys get on and the bottom of the order has to come up to score a run or two, you can’t count on it between the five and nine batters.

Walker vs. Nola: Could Nola Make It

At this time, we don’t have a big sample size for Walker. But knowing he’s already had success against this Phillies lineup twice this season should help his case.

Walker has had success while Nola has allowed six runs in two games against the Mets. Yet, the Mets are solid underdogs on the road in this one.

Prediction

I’m not expecting the Mets to pounce on Nola early in this game. But the Mets have had a solid game plan against him twice this season.

Nola has earned 14 strikeouts in 9.1 innings against the Mets but he’s also allowed 10 hits and three walks in those innings for a WHIP greater than 1.

For our MLB pick, So let’s take the Mets +.5 in the first five innings. Walker can absolutely hold things down for the Mets and if this game ends 0-0 in a pitcher’s duel in the first five innings, that’s totally fine.
