Giants vs. Dodgers MLB Best Bets for May 4

The Under has been a strong MLB pick for the Los Angeles Dodgers – but what about Wednesday’s game with the San Francisco Giants?

San Francisco Giants vs. Los Angeles Dodgers

Wednesday, May 04, 2022 – 10:10 PM EDT at Dodger Stadium

I love it when a plan comes together. Last Friday’s game between the Detroit Tigers and Los Angeles Dodgers went perfectly for our betting picks; we had a slight lean towards under 8.5 here at the ranch, and the Dodgers ended up winning 5-1. Just like nature intended.

But what does nature have in store for us this Wednesday night when the San Francisco Giants visit Chavez Ravine?

Maybe it will be something like Tuesday’s two-game series opener, in which the Dodgers took 3-1 as –138 home faves on the MLB odds board.

We’re still waiting here at the ranch for the Game 2 lines; maybe this will turn out to be another golden opportunity to hammer that Under.

Does Los Angeles Deserves a Sweet Relief

Sweet Relief Los Angeles deserves all the blame for how late these betting odds are. There’s a hole in their rotation that needs to be filled; Andrew Heaney (shoulder), Dustin May (elbow), and Danny Duffy (elbow) are all injured, and Trevor Bauer (suspension) appears to be persona non grata at this point.

With their options somewhat limited, the Dodgers (15-7, plus-0.29 betting units, Under 15-6-1) have yet to declare a starting pitcher at press time.

But they do have a damn fine bullpen. Fangraphs ranks them fifth in the majors at 1.2 WAR, with closer Craig Kimbrel (1.84 FIP) racking up another save Tuesday night.

That’s sweet chin music to under bettors. The Giants (14-9, plus-3.06 units, Under 12-10-1) have some hoses of their own.

Their bullpen ranks seventh overall at 1.0 WAR, and they only needed two innings of relief Tuesday night to three for Los Angeles – even though Carlos Rodon and Julio Urias each went six innings.

Would Alex Wood Pitch the First Five Innings

Not having to bat in the ninth doesn’t carry quite the same benefit for Dodger hitters. And they might have a tough time during the first five innings that Alex Wood (4.06 FIP) seems likely to pitch.

Wood has the total split at 2-2 after four starts, but his unusually high.321 BABIP allowed shows promise for some positive regression. Let’s not forget the other factors that made the under worth a spin in that Tigers game.

Chavez Ravine is still a pitcher’s park, and it’s still only early May – although Wednesday’s forecast calls for game-time temperatures in the mid-70s, which would be 10 degrees warmer than last Friday.

Still not summertime in Los Angeles, but getting closer.

Giants hitters have also run into some problems of their own, though it’s hard to pin down the current status of players like outfielders Austin Slater (knee) and Mike Yastrzemski (COVID).

Pairing the favorite and the under isn’t your classic old-school 2-teamer, but given these circumstances, we’re content to put a slight lean on the Dodgers while we’re at it. Smoke ‘em if you got ‘em.
