Greuther Fürth vs. SC Freiburg

Saturday, March 19, 2022 – 10:30 AM EST at Sportpark Ronhof

Fifth in the Bundesliga table with a 12-8-6 record and 44 points, SC Freiburg are enjoying a solid season. They’re level on points with RB Leipzig (4th) and Hoffenheim (6th) and a point adrift of Bayer Leverkusen (3rd), and, at the same time, they’re mired in a four-way battle for the coveted guaranteed Champions League qualification spots in the Bundesliga table.

SC Freiburg are undefeated in the last six fixtures across all competitions. Currently, domestic form is encouraging with 11 points collected from a potential 15 points in their last five fixtures after settling on three wins and a couple of draws.

The latest lap around Germany’s top-flight resulted in a 3-2 win over Wolfsburg at home, extending SC Freiburg’s undefeated run since mid-February and keeping their Champions League hopes alive.

Next up for Freiburg is a date against the absolute worst side in Bundesliga this season, Greuther Fürth, which props up the table with a woeful 3-5-18 mark and 14 points. Fürth are nine points back of 17th ranked Hertha Berlin as relegation looms as an almost certainty this summer.

Last month, Fürth defied the soccer odds to clinch only its third win of the season, beating Hertha Berlin 2-1 at home. Since that rare triumph, though, the Cloverleaves have had no luck whatsoever, leaking points left and right behind three defeats and a draw. Their last outing was a forgettable 6-1 evisceration by RB Leipzig.

The Pick

Given these contrasting fortunes, it should come as no surprise that SC Freiburg are being tipped as the favorites across multiple sports betting markets. Moreover, one would expect the visitors to come through and heap more misery on Fürth in the process.

Bayern Munich vs. Union Berlin

Saturday, March 19, 2022 - 01:30 PM EST at  Allianz Arena

Bayern Munich are in first place in Bundesliga action with a 19-3-4 record and 60 points through 26 fixtures. They currently have a seven-point advantage over second-placed Borussia Dortmund, but their biggest rivals could close the gap midweek when they take on FSV Mainz in their rescheduled game this Wednesday.

Should Dortmund beat Mainz, the stakes will become much higher in the title race, intensifying the pressure on Bayern Munich ahead of this weekend’s date with Union Berlin at the Allianz Arena. It’s going to be as good as a must-win game for the hosts.

Over the last couple of domestic rounds, the Bundesliga giants have dropped points behind back-to-back draws. Die Roten settled on a 1-1 draw at home to Bayer Leverkusen on matchday 25 and then a 1-1 draw on the road to Hoffenheim on matchday 26.

Manager Julian Nagelsmann was mindful of Bayern’s Champions League commitments during this tricky stretch, perhaps gambling on domestic supremacy as he navigated his side through its R16 tie with Salzburg.

It paid off as Bayern emerged 8-2 winners on aggregate and booked a place in the quarterfinals of Europe’s top-flight competition. Whether they’ll pay the price for those draws in the race for the domestic championship is another matter, however.

Nagelsmann will be keen to get his side back on track in Bundesliga at the expense of Union Berlin. At face value, the visitors represent top-tier competition. Union Berlin rank eighth in the table with a 10-8-8 record and 38 points. Union Berlin are merely six points adrift of Hoffenheim and potential European qualification.

The Pick

That said, beating Bayern at the Allianz is no mean feat. Die Roten are 10-1-2 at home this season. Moreover, Union Berlin’s form is merely 1-1-4 in their last six fixtures overall. This includes a 0-0-3 record on the road that has them slipping to a 3-4-6 record on the road this season. Put simply, an upset by Union Berlin would send seismic shockwaves through the best online betting markets and the Bundesliga too.
