The NFL’s Chicago Bears are seeking a new permanent home, and Indiana is putting on a full-court press to woo them west of the border. However, as fans look ahead to the coming seasons and check the latest futures lines at the best sportsbooks for U.S. players, the city of Chicago still believes it has a chance of keeping the franchise in the Windy City, while an opportunity in suburban Arlington Heights also looms large.

Indiana Courts the Bears With Stadium Dreams

The Chicago Bears and their stadium, Soldier Field, have been a staple of the NFL since the franchise moved from Wrigley Field to Soldier Field in 1971. It’s a gritty, blue-collar stadium that harkens back to an era of far fewer rules and much more punishing hitting.

The team has sought help from Chicago and Illinois for years to build a new stadium, but to no avail. Next-door neighbor Indiana took notice and decided to inject itself into the process by creating and passing Indiana State Bill 27, which would create an agency with the express mission designed to facilitate the construction of a domed stadium in Hammond, Indiana, located approximately 25 minutes south of Chicago.

Indiana Governor Mike Braun has had several conversations with the team and has even hosted the Bears’ owners, the McCaskey family, at the governor’s mansion. He believes Indiana has an excellent chance of convincing the Bears to move from Chicago to Hammond, Indiana, due to a much better deal that the Hoosier State is prepared to honor.

“You’ll get a lot more stadium for the amount of money you invest. And with the vitality and business atmosphere of what you can get coming into Hammond,” Braun said.

While local fans tracking team futures on the top Illinois sports betting sites wait to see where the franchise lands, Indiana has advanced at warp speed to coax a deal with the Bears to occupy a glimmering new stadium at an affordable cost. Meanwhile, the Illinois legislature has moved at a glacial pace, a difference highlighted by Governor Braun.

“The Illinois legislature has been in session for a long time and really has not come up with anything that looks like it’s gonna be what they’re looking for,” Braun said. “I think the merits of where you would want to be long-term, I think that’s what’s in my mind, if I were in their shoes, I’d be putting a lot of emphasis on that.”

Illinois Stuck in Neutral

Although Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson believes his city remains a viable possibility for the Bears to remain, the team has expressed that time has run out on negotiations with the Windy City politicians. The Bears own a 326-acre tract of land in Arlington Heights, which is the only site in Illinois that appears viable.

Chicago Bears President & CEO Kevin Warren wrote an open letter to Bears’ fans explaining the team’s frustration and purpose in exploring other avenues, even the one found in neighboring Indiana.

Warren’s letter, in part, read as follows: “Consequently, in addition to Arlington Park, we need to expand our search and critically evaluate opportunities throughout the wider Chicagoland region, including Northwest Indiana.

“This is not about leverage. We spent years trying to build a new home in Cook County. We invested significant time and resources evaluating multiple sites and rationally decided on Arlington Heights. Our fans deserve a world-class stadium. Our players and coaches deserve a venue that matches the championship standard they strive for every day. With that in mind, our organization must keep every credible pathway open to deliver that future.”

This prospect was bolstered by the Illinois General Assembly passing a bill that would grant tax breaks to so-called megaprojects of at least $100 million, which would easily include the estimated $2 billion domed stadium the team is seeking to build. However, the Illinois Senate has yet to act on the bill, even as pressure mounts on the state to marshal a coordinated plan to keep the Beats in the Land of Lincoln.

The legislature has only until May 31st to act on the bill, considering the team has stated it wants to decide in late spring or early summer.
