Asked this AM why Murray State: "Are you at all worried about the notion of "beating a team three times in a season is difficult" with Murray State?"

Its always in the back of my head, growing up in the early 80's in Chapel Hill UNC Coach and mentor used to say "it's tough as hell to beat a team twice in a year, it's a career achievement to do it 3 in a year against a rival."

These situations always pop up every year but you cant think about it too much in capping. For a team to sneak up and beat a team the third, you gotta look at the underlying stats and issues with prior game (injuries, road vs home, etc), then dig into the stats, if you see parity, ie game is within 5 points each time (or parity in rebounding, TO's, and FG/FT%) and the losing team had more steals or boards, and To's were abnormally high, then you have a situation where the team could beat them on the 3rd try. But when the stats and matchups favor the previous victorious team, you still gotta go with that team. I read somewhere the stats on these 3rd matchups are closer to 55/45 in favor of the team winning a 3rd time.

In Murray's case they wn by 10 and 24 for an average of 16.4...and digging into the stats these games were never really close at all. Murray state in those games shot a combined 47.5% and held Missouri state to 39.8% from the field. The Racers also played #1 conference ranked Indiana State to a close game 77-89 in the finale with ISU pulling away late.

Their biggest advantage over Missouri state is defense and rebounding, where they rank 112nd in scording defense, allowing 70.2 pts per game. I look for Murray State to get their 3rd win today behind a solid defense and their big rebounders down low.
