The Detroit Pistons’ rebuild is off to a rocky start, as the team owns an NBA-worst 6–42 record with Thursday’s trade deadline approaching. While the team is unlikely to break up its young core, fourth-year guard Killian Hayes, the No. 7 pick in the 2020 draft, reportedly would like to find a new home.

As Omari Sankofa II of the Detroit Free Press first reported, the team appears to be on board with a trade: “Hayes’ camp, per a source, would prefer the fourth-year point guard land with a new team. The Pistons seem to agree …,” Sankofa wrote. “It has become more clear the franchise is ready to move on from the 22-year-old, who has excelled at taking care of the ball but otherwise has continued being an inefficient, low-volume scorer and poor fit on a roster deep in young talent at his position.”

Hayes, who will become a restricted free agent this summer, has averaged 6.9 points, 4.8 assists and 2.8 rebounds in 41 games this season. He’s coming off a career-best season in which he tallied 10.3 points, 6.2 assists and 2.9 rebounds per game in 76 appearances in 2022-23.
