Not many thrills across the pond for the last golf major of the year, however, Brian Harman was the story with a special performance for his life-changing win. We go over all the details. Max Verstappen is tied for the second-longest win streak in F1 racing history and there was an amusing moment on the champions’ podium. This and baseball highlights, free picks, and top trends, with other compelling news.

About Last Weekend…

Golf

On Friday of the Open Championship, Brian Harman made four birdies in the first five holes of the tournament that proved in retrospect to end it right there. Harman coasted to a six-shot win for his first major victory, after having just two Top 10 finishes in 14 years on the Tour.

Harman was hitting everything tight and ended up with the record for the fewest putts of 106 (109 old records) and he never missed inside five feet in the final two rounds. That makes him the 5th left-hander to win a major. (Phil Mickelson, Bob Charles, Mike Weir, and Bubba Watson are the others.)

MLB

Baltimore solidified their position as the best team not only in the AL East but the American League in winning three of four at Tampa Bay. The Orioles grabbed the lead in Games 1, 3, and 4 and though they were tied by the Rays each time, they never relinquished them and got the big hits to win the contests. Rays’ hitters were really pressing with runners in scoring position. Though they made comebacks, they easily could have won at least two of the contests they lost, but were swinging for 500-foot homers instead of putting the lumber on the round white object.

San Diego had a perfect chance to crawl with two games of .500, heading home to face Pittsburgh and possibly crawl over .500. Instead, the Padres were lifeless Sunday as -205 road favorites and were held scoreless by Alex Faedo (?) for six innings who lowered his ERA to 5.90 with that showing in a 3-1 setback. Good to great players on the Friars, but a lack of leadership is obvious.

After showing life, St. Louis lost the last three games of the four played at Wrigley Field and fell to 44-56 their worst start in 28 seasons.

The Reds beat Arizona 7-3 as +102 home underdogs Sunday. Luke Weaver started for Cincinnati and allowed three runs on eight hits and two walks over four innings before being pulled. Check out this unreal story on Weaver.

Cincinnati has scored 78 runs in Weaver’s last 10 starts. Talk about covering a sore with a giant band-aid!

Trendy Talk

MLB

  • Detroit is 10-1 (+14.5 Units) when playing against a marginal winning team (Win Pct. 51% to 54%) this season.
  • Arizona is 28-11 (+25 Units) after having lost 4 of their last 5 games in the last two seasons.
  • Cincinnati is 26-8 after two or more consecutive wins this season.
  • Houston is 12-0 Over when playing on Monday this season.
  • Cleveland is 20-5 Under against division opponents.
  • L.A. Dodgers are 20-6 Over in interleague games in 2021.
  • Chicago White Sox are 2-17 after five or more consecutive road games. (Tuesday)
  • Boston is 4-14 (-15.9 Units) in interleague home games. (Tuesday)

What to Watch for and Win (Hopefully)

MLB

We are basically a week away from the trade deadline and while we are waiting to see what happens in that area, we have free baseball picks, parlays, and daily top props.

Soccer

On Monday and Tuesday, we are releasing the Women's World Cup 2023 free picks for action this coming Thursday and Friday. Be in the know this week.

Football

As football draws closer, we have new NCAAF and NFL articles for you to read. Beginning, Tuesday we have a Bills preview and win total prediction and Wednesday we discuss if Georgia could be a three-peat possibility this upcoming season.

The Buzz

Formula 1 Racing – Mad Max Rolling and Things Go a Touch Overboard

We have not talked much about F1 racing on these pages but Max Verstappen won his 7th consecutive race, which ties the 2nd-longest win streak by a driver in F1 history.

On the podium, 2nd place finisher Lando Norris got a little too excited as you can see.

NBA – Collective Bargaining Contract Should Keep Parity Coming

In the past five years, there have been five different NBA champions.
  • 2023 - Denver Nuggets
  • 2022 - Golden State Warriors
  • 2021 - Milwaukee Bucks
  • 2020 - Los Angeles Lakers
  • 2019 - Toronto Raptors

The last time that occurred was 1975-80. The NBA is known for its dynasties and that helps develop bitter rivalries but this limits the number of teams actually playing for the Larry O’Brien trophy.

The new CBA is good for the players, owners, and fans of more teams.

Here is an article that explains the whole process going forward.

NFL - Running Backs - Another Update

Reports have Saquon Barkley and Josh Jacobs not reporting for training camp. The top RBs in the NFL had a Zoom call Saturday and reports had ideas kicked around with no formative results.

This needs to be followed in August and maybe beyond.

Top Betting System

MLB – Mariners vs. Twins (Under 8 -115)

Play Under on teams like the Twins when the total is 8 to 8.5, after a game where they stranded 15 or more runners on base, with a hot bullpen whose ERA is under 2.50 the last 10 games. Teams like Minnesota are 39-11 Under in this rare situation.

Out the Door

MLB – Today’s Biggest Line Move

Though the Dodgers just won road series at the Mets, Orioles, and Rangers, the latter two first-place teams, they have dropped from -135 home favorites to -115 despite the second-best home record in MLB at 29-16. Bettors are preferring Toronto’s Jose Berrios (8-7, 3.39 ERA) over L.A.'s Michael Grove (2-2, 6.40 ERA), who has a 1.47 ERA over his last three starts.

MLB – Fastball Down, Cutters Up

With so many pitchers throwing in the upper 90s, batters have become accustomed to that velocity. If a pitcher doesn’t have movement or is all over the place with the heater, batters will make them pay.

That is why the cutter has become so popular among most pitchers because it looks like a fastball, but has a late break going across, and that pitch from a right-hand pitcher, which moves away right a right-hand hitter or down and in on a lefty swinger.

What Bettors Like – Play or Fade?

MLB - Top 3 Bets by Percentage (highest first) (123-80 record, 26-10 of run)

  • Padres
  • Reds/Brewers Over
  • Orioles/Phillies Over

Let’s get some winners! See you back here Wednesday.
