My selection is on Toronto first half over Philadelphia at 8 pm et on Wednesday.

While it's only Game 3, this is essentially a must-win contest for the Raptors as they try to dig themselves out of an 0-2 hole after appearing completely outmatched in Philadelphia. I do expect Toronto to come out strong on Wednesday - I'm just not convinced it can sustain it for four quarters. Note that the Raptors did come out on fire in Game 2, jumping ahead by a considerable margin early on. They also came out very physical, however, and that only seemed to fuel the 76ers fire as they quickly woke up after a sluggish start.

Here, I don't expect the Raptors to initiate those sort of early extracurriculars. With all of the talk surrounding the Raps and their inability to keep Joel Embiid from the free-throw line, I expect a different story to unfold - at least early on - in this one. Toronto has a history of coming up big on its home floor in the playoffs in recent years, especially when trailing a series. Look for the Raps to carry a lead into halftime on Wednesday. Take Toronto first half.

Play on:
Guardians -135

A mixture of rain and snow forced the postponement of the Guardians' scheduled series opener against the White Sox on Monday. Tuesday's game was also postponed and now it's a doubleheader on Wednesday. The first game's pitching matchup remains the same as initially scheduled for Monday. I have tried Bieber over Keuchel the last two days and have been left with postponements. Is the third time the charm? Here's my analysis.

The White Sox ended an 11-year postseason drought in 2020 with a wild card appearance. They then ran away with the American League Central title last season with a 93-69 record, winning the division by 13 games. Chicago is hoping for even more in 2022 and has opened 6-3. Cleveland began a new era in 2022 (no longer the Indians, now the Guardians).

Cleveland lost to the Cubs in the 2016 World Series (led 3-1, before losing the final three games) and followed with THREE more postseason appearances in the next four years (exception was in 2019 when the team won 93 games). However, Cleveland would go just 80-82 in 2021 and looks for a bounce-back season in 2022. The Guardians opened 4-2 but just got swept this past weekend at home by the Giants, leaving them 4-5 as they welcome the White Sox to Progressive Field.

The Chicago bats have been relatively quiet, as the White Sox are averaging 4.22 RPG. Cleveland averages 5.44 RPG (3rd) but that average is somewhat misleading. Cleveland averaged 11.0 RPG during the team's four-game winning streak from April 10-13 but has scored a TOTAL of just five runs in the team's five losses. This marks the first contest of a seven-game road trip for Chicago and the White Sox will send Dallas Keuchel (1-0, 5.40 ERA) to the mound to face Cleveland's Shane Bieber (0-0, 2.70 ERA).

Keuchel won the NL Cy Young back in 2015 with Houston (20-8, 2.4 ERA). However, he's just 58-47 (3.96 ERA) since. Keuchel posted a 4.25 ERA before the All-Star break in 2021, before recording a 6.82 mark in 14 games (13 starts) in the second half. Keuchel's first start of 2022 was last Wednesday, when he allowed three ERs over five innings at home to Seattle, earning a 6-4 win. He's made 12 career starts vs Cleveland, going 4-2 with a 3.30 ERA (teams are 7-5).

Bieber was a rookie in 2018 and in 2019 went 15-8 and was the All-Star Game's MVP. In the COVID-shortened 2020 season he went 8-1 in 12 starts (team was 10-2), leading the AL in wins, ERA (1.63) and Ks (122), while posting an 0.87 WHIP and .167 BAA. He won the AL's Cy Young award. Bieber missed a chunk of the 2021 season (7-4 with a 3.17 ERA but 134 Ks in 96.2 IP) with a strained throwing shoulder but was expected to be back at full strength this season.

He lasted 4.2 innings in his 2022 debut, allowing just one ER on three hits with a 4-0 KW ratio. He took a no-decision in Cleveland's 3-1 loss. He then went 5.1 innings in his second start, allowing three ERs in a 10-5 Cleveland win at Cincinnati (another no-decision). He's been solid vs the White Sox, going 5-2 with a 2.55 ERA in 12 starts (team is 8-4).

Perfect situation for Cleveland to get its first home win of 2022 against the White Sox behind Bieber.

Good luck...Larry

Jack’s Pick for Wednesday:
Cleveland Guardians -130 (Game 1)

The Cleveland Guardians will be highly motivated for a victory after getting swept by the San Francisco Giants over the weekend. They should get back in the win column in Game 1 of this series with the Chicago White Sox due to their advantage on the mound.

Ace Shane Bieber takes the ball for the Guardians. He has gone 41-18 with a 3.28 ERA and 1.111 WHIP in his career while posting a 3.60 ERA and 0.700 WHIP in two starts this season. Bieber is 5-2 with a 2.55 ERA and 1.000 WHIP in 12 career starts against the White Sox as well.

Dallas Keuchel is one of the weak links in this Chicago rotation. He went 9-9 with a 5.28 ERA and 1.531 WHIP in 30 starts last season. Keuchel is 0-1 with a 7.15 ERA in his last two starts against the Guardians while allowing 9 earned runs and 3 homers in 11 1/3 innings.

Chicago is 15-42 in its last 57 games as a road underdog. Cleveland is 36-15 in its last 51 games as a home favorite. Bet the Guardians in Game 1 Wednesday.

Game:
New York Yankees (917) @ Detroit Tigers (918)
Time: Wednesday 04/20 6:40 PM Eastern
Pick: New York -158 (moneyline)

The New York Yankees took the opener in Detroit last night 4-2. The Yankee bats have been quiet all season, but the surprise has been the depth of pitching they have displayed. The Yankees have allowed 31 total runs through their first 11 games, posting two shutouts. The Tigers just don't have the lineup to challenge here as they've managed three runs or fewer in 70% of their games this season. Luis Severino appears to be his old self, and that just makes things tougher on the Tigers. Make the play on the NY Yankees.
