You also have to factor in that he leads the NBA all time in assists by a huge margin that may never be broken because he's 3000+ assists ahead of the next guy on the list.
Yeah, I know overall he’s a stud basketball player maybe top 25 of all time. If you read in between those two posts I did change my tune, and my vote regarding John Stockton.

He's also a better defender than Nash who really wasn't known for defense but for his shooting prowess. It's between Nash and Thomas for guys I'd vote off this list but despite Nash's MVP awards I voted him off because Thomas was a winner having won both a college and NBA championship.

I had a lapse and forgot just how legendary his career has been, so I adjusted my vote.
Let me ask you a question bazzy. If John Stockton was to play today against these athletes who are more athletic but overall more lazy on defense it’s fair to say, how many points would he average a game in 2026 ? In fact, I ask everybody in this thread that same question.
19-21 PPG easy.

He’d hunt more three-pointers and get a few more calls in the lane too.

His mid-range pull-up and floaters would be lethal against modern defenses.

I agree Stockton was a pretty decent shooter and with the game shifting to point guards taking and making more threes he'd increase his scoring average between 5-7 points per game just because he'd take and make more threes.

Except Stockton was twice the defender. He's top of the list in steals which means he was a great two way point guard.
Yeah that steals record is more impressive to me & it is a good arguing point when ppl say he's the assists leader because of Karl Malone - Well nobody assisted Stockton on defense in picking other players' pockets

As I mentioned before we've never seen another player in any sport hold those records on BOTH offense & defense

In my opinion that is amazing

He would carve these kids up nowadays with fundamentals, it would be hilarious to watch. These kids have never seen anyone with bounce passes like John. He got all those assists with mostly bums for shooters. Other than Hornacek, he never really played with any sharp shooters.
