Looks like he's fairly new. Started his pro career in 2021 with the Pirates, then acquired by the Padres last yr.

"The Padres originally signed Marcano for $320,000 out of Venezuela as part of their 2016-17 international spending spree"

The reason he's looking at a potential lifetime ban is for breaking MLB Rule 21.

It specifically states that a player who bets on games involving his own team is automatically subject to a lifetime ban.

He's with the Padres now but last season he tore an ACL while playing for Pittsburgh. He bet on the Pirates while he was injured, he did not play in games he bet.

The younger generation is exposed to a lot more normalized betting than previous generations. They really need to hammer home the repercussions for even a small bet.

I a lifetime ban here would really be sending a message. Let's see what happens.

Yeah it could be as simple as when he was injured heard about the betting apps and out of boredom not playing he took the bait

He knew the rules and he chose to break them anyway. Sad. Good bye career.

Yep, no matter how hard you hammer it home, there's bound to be some who just ignore the rules. Thankfully, it's few and far between.

The league might have rules and education, but a good Agent will go above and beyond that to help protect his client in nearly all aspects of life.

Especially financial (with the help of advisors) and especially with things that can get you banned from the sport for life.

True.

But what is the reason why other players don't have agents? big commission?

Did he bet on his own games?

Thanks for the context.

I hope they go easy on him, though. On the scale of athlete scandals this is a long way from the Henry Ruggs end of the spectrum.

Yeah, unless there are a crazy amount of bets and sharing info with others, or some other shit, etc, it would be one cold harsh message sent if they give him the lifetime ban.
