From the ESPN Story:

“Initially, a spokesman for Ohtani told ESPN the slugger had transferred the funds to cover Mizuhara's gambling debt. The spokesman presented Mizuhara to ESPN for a 90-minute interview Tuesday night, during which Mizuhara laid out his account in great detail. However, as ESPN prepared to publish the story Wednesday, the spokesman disavowed Mizuhara's account and said Ohtani's lawyers would issue a statement.

The spokesman declined to answer any further questions, and the statement did not specify whom they believe perpetrated the alleged theft.”

So picture is becoming clearer - Feds were prepared to announce an indictment of the bookmaker - and as part of this indictment they realized it would implicate Ohtani and his friend - so they tipped Ohtani management team to let them get ahead of the story.

Management team gives ESPN an exclusive interview with the interpreter- who gives DETAILED information in the course of the 90 minute interview. Management team reviews the interview after and before publication and decides it does not look good - so tosses interpreter under the bus.

Huge red flag here and have a feeling this bites them in the ass. For someone to talk to 90 minutes and give a detailed explanation suggest 1 of 2 things - either they have built up a complex story with significant prep time or they are honest in their retelling of events. The timeline between when Feds would have began an indictment and when the interview was given just doesn’t give alot of time here. Wires were in September and October - obviously the bookie was under surveillance - but no way feds put this case together totally in 2023.

Likely timeline is they didn’t have this one wrapped up and ready to go until early March - and at that late stage notified Ohtani people - asking for cooperation in exchange for clemency. Ohtani team suggest his friend cooperate - so he does. Unfortunately the truth doesn’t look good for Ohtani - so his legal team does what’s in their clients best interest (the person who pays them) and screws over the friend - making him to be the criminal.

Note how they make sure to say bets were on soccer markets - never baseball. Sorry - I’m not buying it. Both Ohtani and his interpreter are very familiar with baseball and have connections in the sport. You think a guy who hangs around baseball players all day isn’t taking any perceived advantage and using it - especially after he loses the first million ? Nah - I’m calling bullshit on that.

Then there’s the alleged bets - everything on soccer - right. Coincidentally- these transfers began shortly after Ohtani was injured and out from the game. Clearly, no bookie is allowing action for a player participating in an event - but someone who has insight but not participating they would potentially allow - hoping to gain valuable info they themselves would use to bet the games and profit.

And why was the translator using only this bookie ? Not like there aren’t other options available in Japan - many of whom would be more discreet than an American and not under the watchful eye of the IRS/FBI ? Again - you’re smart enough to organize this massive fraud - but not smart enough to be able to contact a mid level Yakuza boss to set something up ? Nah - you’re either as smart as they paint you to be - or they are so completely stupid they allowed an idiot to walk off with millions - and I don’t think his people are stupid.

They are suggesting Ohtani is a victim of theft

Still under investigation, nobody officially charged

Hmmmmm

If Ohtani truly isn’t involved, then has to be someone close enough to him to have access to his account

if not his friend & translator, maybe a family member??

This is the real story.
Thanks Djeff...

Ohtani might get off without a bruise with the way MLB/Dodgers are playing it.

Funny isn’t it - guy is playing with “bookie to the stars” - despite being a relative no one himself.

MLB gets word Puig is playing with him and he’s out - but Ohtani is a “victim”.

Very clearly this is being covered up - Nix and Boyer aren’t idiots. They know for a fact Ohtani’s interpreter doesn’t have 500k - much less 5 million plus - so they aren’t letting him bet that amount without the ability to cover it.

Either they “believed” Ohtani was the bettor - or they knew it.

The more I’m reading on this whole thing - the more it’s smells - both of government corruption and of coverup. A lot of casino personnel caught up and being shaken down for failing to file SAR reports. Political game between California and the proponents of gambling as well as operators who have a vested interest in shutting down offshore betting operations.

This will be swept under the rug by MLB - no way they make their star look bad while taking money from DraftKings/FanDuel. At the same time - your gonna have the MLBPA caught in a tough spot here - they are getting 0 of that casino money that’s flooding into the leagues - but if they push back - they are going against their highest dues player and revenue generator.

You have the answer Djeff....
MLB will cover it up.

We 100% know Ohtani was making the bets. No way would the bookie give $4.5M credit to an assistant that makes at best $500k (today). Before the massive Ohtani contract the interpretor was probably making <$150K best case.

That bookie isn't stupid. He would never have floated that credit unless it was Ohtani.
But, we will likely never know. MLB will cover it up.

the interpreter was making between 300k and 500k a year who knows if he didn't get any more kind of bonuses from ohtani, i really doubt ohtani would risk a 700 million dollar contract i read he doesn't even gamble, i don't think ohtani did any of the gambling was just trying to help a friend pay back his debts

It should be noted that everyone involved in the story has said Ohtani does not gamble, including Mizuhara and the alleged illegal bookmaker involved in the story.

also if ohtani was the one gambling he would dumb enough send money directly in his name cmon

I agree

I think it was someone other than Ohtani

I can see a scenario where whoever had access to the funds, thought they could win some big money, and then put the money used back in Ohtani’s account and it appear as nothing ever happened

Ohtani has to have multiple bank accounts with millions in each one

We don’t know who had access to the one on question

Ohtani: Hey Translator dude, I think the Magic is going to win tonight.
Translator: Great choice, Ohtani-san, shall I phone it in?
Ohtani: Yeah. 100,000 American dollars. On the halftime. And 200,000 more on the full game. And put 50k on the first quarter Magic money line for good measure.

Translator: Ohtani-san, that bookmaker is calling again, I think you should pay him.
Ohtani: What bookmaker? WHAT BOOKMAKER, you slant**-eye mother***** thief!??!!!
