NBA Tourney Starts Tonight???

Seems confusing. Will there still be playoffs and a champion at the end of the year? Or is this a separate championship all together?

I think this is separate it’s just basically regular season games

This is a separate in season "tournament" that counts towards your win loss record with the exception the championship game which sits outside your regular season record. A prize pool will be allocated to teams qualifying for the knockout stage and increase based on how far you go. The semi-finals and finals will be held in Vegas on a neutral court but all group stage and knockout games will happen at the home arenas.

It will be interesting to see how teams get up for this because while it does affect the regular season standings the main goal is still to win the NBA championship in the Finals and not some in season tournament designed to drum up interest in the regular season.

Also to get more casuals interested in the NBA regular season. A lot of people don't start watching until Christmas or around the time football is over.

They tried bribing, that wouldn't work, so the win loss record was the answer to getting the teams somewhat motivated for the tourney and stretching it out mixes it up enough to maybe deal with some excessive load management.

But I'm sure "loads will still be managed" in the NBA.

Probably a good addition to the NBA, a good model to adopt.

I don't follow soccer so I don't have a clue. Seems to me the NBA should just do what it is always done. Go based off of win-loss records and playoffs. Don't overcomplicate things here

They will still have the regular NBA post season, this is just another way to make the games they already play have other meaning.

This is an in-season tourney.

Its designed to boost regular season ratings basically. They know nobody really pays attention to the NBA until the playoffs so they're trying anything to get people to watch regular season games too.

I know you guys hate the NBA but I can't get enough. I'm a basketball junkie though as my job revolves around basketball so I'm watching basketball at all levels constantly. I still think the NBA has the best players in the world and to me its still fun to watch even if the good old days of the 80's and 90's are long gone.

They probably don't need it but judging from the games tonight the players are out there competing hard because they're playing for something and if they advance far enough everybody on the team gets a little extra cash so there's reason to get up for this tournament for the players. I kind of the like the idea if the players are going to give a little extra effort for a game in November than they normally would.
