Everyone gets excited about the Kentucky Derby, but in my experience the week leading up to the Derby, and the Derby undercard, is where the real value lies.

The Kentucky circuit is an incestuous old-boys network, so when the big names ship in for this week I am always on the lookout for some of the locals being ignored on the tote.

Look alive, men. There is money to be made.

Race 8
$20 win #11 Tizntshelovely 15-1
$2 exbx 5-11
.50c tri 5,11/ALL/5,11
.50c P3 11/ALL/5,7

Dallas Stewart is a longtime Kentucky guy that apprenticed under D. Wayne Lukas. He hasn’t had the success of guys like Pletcher, who also learned from the legend, but he surprises at big prices on the circuit when ignored. It’s always rewarding to play him underneath as well.

Risked $39

Dudsville. We get two more shots at Stewart in the finale. Until then….

Race 9
$20 win #7 Girls Weekend 12-1
$2 exbx 3-7
.50c tri 3,7/ALL/3,7
$2 DD 3,7/5,7
Going against Lukas at a big number on Derby week will probably have me banging my head after the race. But Beckham had a solid Turfway meet, rested his horses through Keeneland, and seems to be on the verge of a breakthrough on the Kentucky circuit. What better time to break out than Derby week?

Risked $37

Last shot at glory for the night. Going with the longer half of Stewart entry:

Race 10
$20 win #5 Berniedott 15-1
$2 exbx 5-7
.50c tri 5,7/ALL/5,7

A Stewart bookend in the tri would be swell.

Risked $31

It's tough to go against Journalism but getting around 5/2 or 3/1 in a 20 horse field is not an attractive wager; I'm also looking at Publisher and Baeza, if he draws in. I'm definitely going to toss all the need-the-lead and pace presser types as well as the two foreigners.

@rdalert447 and @str are our real horse sharps
I know the game as well as one can. I do not know a lot of the current players in the game however . I have barely followed it since I left but my edge is understanding what I see and why it occurs.
You would hope so after training for over 20 years and coming up under the leading trainer in North America in the 70’s.
I do try and help players to better understand what they see but a lot of it is just not that easy to understand without working at it.
