Interesting read but in my opinion no. If someone had a gambling addiction I don’t see it getting better nor worse with the addition of legalized online gambling. Prior to legalization there was and still is plenty of un-regulated alternatives

Faaak no, just like the removal of any of the prohibition laws in our histories did not effect addictions to alcohol/weed/sex/etc - because with or without prohibition people will still feed their addictions regardless.

Agreed. I'm not suggesting if the answer is yes sports betting regulation has increased gambling addictions that that's a bad thing. Free choice, but if the answer was yes, that will only be a good thing for us gamblers by having more safe choices to choose from that offer the juicy (or less so) offers than un-regulated. Probably a few years until that happens though.

Think the issue you're talking about is if increasing the opportunities towards addiction will make it worse - and of course you are right that it would.

But the article in the original post is talking about laws - as history had proven, laws are not effective in decreasing availability/opportunity towards anything, there is not a single thing worldwide throughout history that laws have effectively eliminated.

So, I agree that availability increases addiction, but disagree that laws decrease availability.

That's why I say the answer is no to the above question in the original post.

i mean, there's inevitably going to be an increase in the number of addicts since there's been an influx of new bettors in the market (i.e. those who run the straight and narrow in life and didn't bet at all until it became legal in their states).

that said, the vast majority of these new bettors are recreational and likely won't be as prone to becoming addicted like the others who've been playing with locals and un-regulated for decades now. they'll simply win and lose some, and eventually realize over time it's very hard to profit long-term. at that point, they'll just find a different hobby to spend their disposable income on rather than getting addicted to the chase.

it's hard to say what % of new bettors will become addicted, but yes, overall the number of addicted gamblers will increase due to legalization. but it shouldn't be a material number in the big picture, since various casino and sports wagering outlets have been available for many decades now.

While most ppl have some willpower & self control, there are those few who lose control.

Eating
Smoking
Shopping
Sex

I don’t think it matters. People have gambling addiction, be it ponies or casino. The difference with sports is you can actually beat the house.
When they house offers you a spread of 7.5/-7.5 it is a best guess for a 50/50 chance, but usually it isn’t. You have thousands of events, if you add in adjusted/alternative odds, prop bet, 1st half, 1st quarter, live bets. For the house to be right around 3-5% correction at 100% of the time is impossible. Hence so many books go belly up.

Everyone here that has gambled for at least 10 years have self discipline and money management that can resist the addiction. The problem is new gamblers that have no self control and poor money management that will become addicted to chasing their losses.

It's better to gamble on sports than gamble on slot machines. The most addicted gamblers play slot machines.
