[h=1]Denmark: Online gambling revenue moves ahead of brick & mortar[/h]

The fantastically named Danish gambling regulator Spillemyndigheden made waves this past week when it announced, in its annual report for 2017, that online gambling revenue in Denmark had finally exceeded the total coming in from land-based gaming ventures. Online gambling revenue was reported to have made up a total of 51.5% of all gambling revenues in 2017, as compared with 47.4% during the previous year.
For those of you more interested in raw figures, the total numbers amount to €1.2 billion in total revenue across fiscal year 2017, with lotteries making up the lion’s share at just over a third of the total amount, followed by sports betting and online casino income.
Revenue across many forms of gambling also seems to be consistently on the rise in Denmark, with Danes spending 15.5% more than the previous year on online casino gaming, and over 7% more per year on sports betting (both online and brick & mortar combined.)
The Danes seem to like a flutter, but the average expenditure is not outlandish; the average Danish player spending the equivalent of around €21 per month on gambling related activities.
Spillemyndigheden did note in its report that Denmark is one of the highest spenders per player for betting and casino gaming. A full half of the market for online gaming is males under 35, which is typical and unsurprising. Measured by gross gaming revenue measure, Denmark ranks third in Europe in spend-per-player. Meanwhile, online gambling has been growing exponentially for two years now and shows no sign of abating.
In terms of the relative popularity of online gambling options, Spillemyndigheden reported that Danes strongly preferred virtual gaming machines to any other product, with over 60% of all online gambling activity focused on these. Roulette took up 11% of the market, with Blackjack at 10%. The Danish self-exclusion system ROFUS saw a huge rise in uptake, with 46% more signups than in the previous year.
Overall there was a typical preponderance of men playing far more than women online, with men responsible for over 82% of all online wagering. Denmark now boasts thirty-five licenses for online casinos, one for sports betting, and just seven for land-based casinos.
