For that price you're better off getting a smartwatch. I don't believe it has a lot of the capabilities of traditional smartwatch but I could be wrong

For some reason he didn't want an apple watch. Not sure why but, it might be that you have to buy a separate cell phone plan for them???? He's pretty frugal with his money.

You don't NEED one. You can connect via wifi but if you have the watch that you can connect via LTE you can have the watch have its own number

There's 2 options with apple watch

A. You have to have the phone within range of you to use some functions

B. You pay around $10 extra per month for CELLULAR service, which means you can leave the actual phone at home and still use the watch with phone capabilities
