That's a pretty obscure stat to try and compare players from different "eras".

I'd disagree. while it's overlooked ,it's not obscure and it is meaningful to assess the competition.

50 wins means very similar things across the "eras" of the players mentioned. I feel like we've had the same number of NBA games my entire lifetime and very little expansion.
