So I’m in the market for a new truck

Just watched my truck get loaded up on the Carvana hauler..the truck I said I’d never sell - I just sold it.

Their stupid system WAY overpaid - guess when you have something low miles the computer is susceptible to mistakes. 2021 Tundra with 12k miles - sold for 66,400. Truck I paid 52 for new - drive sparingly for 5 years and profited from thanks to inflation.

Now to find a replacement I like. No more Toyota - hate the new ones. Will never buy a Ford - so it’s Ram or Chevy - Ram quality sucks and Chevy has engine issues and oh - everything is like 85k+

Figure I can go a few months - wait and buy something and write off by titling to the business…still having a chunk of change sitting in the bank is tempting - too tempting…try and make an easy score playing a fave or 2 and pad my bankroll. Need to stay clear of that temptation,

Why did you get rid of the Tunda? Was it a 2nd Gen Tundra?

If it was 2nd Gen, those are in huge demand even though they are 5-15 yrs old because of their reliability. That, and the low miles, is probably why you got max $$$.

Latest generation is as bad as Tundra - 2014 or before were great. V6 - run forever and go anywhere.

I loved the Tundra - but a 65k vehicle should come with more creature comforts than a 1990s Chevy had.

It was a 2021 built to 2008 level tech - not a bad thing, but for what you pay for them - just felt wasteful. If I truly decide I must have one again - I’d buy a 2017-2018 and save $40k by accepting something with 100k miles on it. Same basic interior, same crappy factory stereo I’d replace day 1 and a real transmission cooler and not a hockey puck so you can tow something and not cook a transmission.

I have a 2016 Tacoma before that a 2001 which I bought brand new for about 20g. The only problems I've had with either is me getting into accidents. I stay on top of the basic maintenance. I just hit 127k on mine ...

Tacoma's are a solid option if you're willing to go with a midsize pickup.

2nd gens are absolutely bulletproof proof drive train wise.

But they feel very truck like - utilitarian, ride rough and for a 5 year old truck - it was an opportunity to trade out and try something new if I want to.

I’m still not against the idea of “trading down” and just getting a higher mileage 2nd gen Tundra and just modding to taste.

65k was too much to pass on for me - for that I could get a 2017-18 Tundra and have enough left over to buy a nice classic.

The new Tundras engine problems - a lot of that is overblown coverage of poor QC in 2022/23s. Simple answer - Toyota let too much slip through and the little specs of metal destroyed the ultra tight tolerances. Same problem with many Ram transmissions.

It’s ridiculous that you need to change engine oil at 500-1000 miles, just like it’s ridiculous on the Ram you gotta swap differential oil at a few thousand miles or 6 months to get the crap out - but that’s where modern manufacturing is sadly. I’ve seen the Blackstone reports for myself and it’s crazy - but that bit of preventive maintenance seems to save ALOT of headaches. Seen it on tractors and side by side/ITV’s too the last 5-7 years…small engines and sloppy QC allowing shavings to remain = big issues on expensive new machines. Some people think I’m crazy doing a quick fluid change so early - but it saves a lot of problems.

So stopped at 4 local dealers today - Toyota, Chevy, Ford and Ram.

Of the 4 - 1 salesperson actually checked on me (Toyota) and that was a complete joke. On lot for 20 minutes - looking at new Tundras, sales lady walks out - sandwich in hand eating before yelling at me from 15 feet away “you just looking or are you buying?” - like seriously. I mean I get it, the chances of converting a walk on customer at 11a on a wed is low…but Christ are you that lazy/bored to not even act professional ?!?

Chevy / Ford never even bothered to check in - the Chevy salesperson may have been only one working that early and appears to have came back from a used car demo with some kid on a 90s trans am - so I’d give them a pass there.

Ram to be fair greeted my within 2 minutes when stopping there earlier last week. Today I just pulled directly onto their auxiliary lot across the road from main dealership - so not unreasonable to not be greeted there.

But man - these salespeople today, it’s sad. I never worked for a dealership - but had my office in dealerships for 5 years working for insurance companies and had plenty of downtime to BS with the owners and management to know how the game works. These guys would have had a stroke seeing customers greeted like the girl at Toyota.

what do you want it for? If it's just a toy, probably best to just go with a cybertruck, or f150 Raptor if you want an ICE. If you want it for a specific purpose, then that will determine what's best.
