Ciryl Gane vs. Alexander Volkov

UFC Heavyweight Bout

Saturday, June 26, 2021 – 11:55 PM EDT at the Apex Centre

French muay thai/kickboxing standout Ciryl Gane (8-0 MMA) has quickly risen through the UFC heavyweight rankings and this weekend could see the Frenchman gain even more traction in his quest to become heavyweight champion. A small eight-fight record may deliver an uncertainty amongst martial arts critics, but when you dig deeper into Gane’s background, you’ll soon realise as to why he’s made his way into main event matchups In under two years signed with the company (UFC).

Highlight victories against former champion Junior Dos Santos and heavy-hitter Jairzinho Rozenstruik now puts Gane in a position to begin staking his claim for an opportunity at UFC gold. Gane is literally one/two wins away from stepping up, and he indeed owns the skillset to achieve to match. Alexander Volkov (33-8) is a veteran in the world of mixed martial arts, and a forty-one-fight professional career has stemmed through all of the major promotions in MMA. For the previous five years, he’s made his stamp on amongst the UFC’s finest.

A two-fight win streak over Walt Harris and Alistair Overeem also leave Volkov in a position to fight for the title should he defeat Gane this weekend; however, this task is easier said than done.

Volkov is rarely on the end of a reach disadvantage, and given the technical striking ability of Gane, it’s challenging to overlook his chances of victory this weekend. I want to suggest a grappling gameplan would be Volkov’s greatest opportunity to win, but Gane has proven to evolve his ground skills to a great level even then.

During Gane’s rise to heavyweight fame, finding flaws within his martial arts skillset has been difficult. He’s handled the power of Rozenstruik and almost made the Suriname native look a shell of his former self. I predict Gane will have no problem winning the striking at range game with Volkov, checking the leg kicks and defending any takedown attempts.

Ovince Saint Preux vs. Tanner Boser

UFC Heavyweight Bout

Saturday, June 26, 2021 - 11:05 PM EDT at the Apex Centre

Another pair of heavyweight sluggers will throw down in the co-main event as we introduce Tanner Boser into the upper echelon of UFC competitors. A veteran of the UFC octagon Ovince Saint Preux (25-15-0), will attempt to welcome Tanner Boser (19-8-1) into an experienced world of violence he’s yet to see.

It looks like OSP is tired of cutting weight and would instead test his skills in the heavyweight division, where weight-cutting is non-existent for a fighter of his stature. Although he’ll be making his UFC, OSP will still own the size advantage in all areas, so don’t be under the illusion he’s undersized for the division. He did make an appearance at heavyweight versus Ben Rothwell, where OSP was the diminutive fighter who eventually lost via a close split decision.

Tanner Boser could be fighting for his job in this contest; back-to-back losses doesn’t fair well for any fighter. With that said, a win against OSP would nullify this outcome, and Boser could find himself back on track.

The problem for Boser is his inability to defend his back, and once the fight is grounded, you’ll notice that Boser struggles to find his way back up. This would be the clear path to victory for OSP. Still, with durability issues and cardio question marks (especially at heavyweight), this fight becomes an extremely rough contest to bet against when picking a side.

OSP is a kill or is killed type of fighter, and because Boser has experienced many outcomes end by decision, the available UFC odds on this one to end inside the distance are fairly priced.
