Boston Red Sox vs. Toronto Blue Jays

Monday, April 25, 2022 – 07:07 PM EDT at Rogers Centre

The Boston Red Sox will travel to Rogers Centre to take on the Toronto Blue Jays on the road. Players must be vaccinated to play in Toronto and some Red Sox players aren’t vaccinated. However, it’s unclear how many players or who could be missing time.

So make sure to double-check lineups before submitting a bet for this game. The one notable player is Tanner Houck, who is definitely not vaccinated and won’t pitch in this series. But his absence shouldn’t affect handicapping knowing Nathan Eovaldi and Jose Berrios will take the mound tonight.

Berrios has a 3.93 xFIP with a 25.8% strikeout rate dating back to last year. He’s also limited walks to 6.2%, however, has a 6.35 ERA to start the 2022 season. Berrios tends to give up a whole lot of line-drive contact and also allows over 25% of line drives.

To lefties, Berrios is giving up a .353 wOBA and ISO of .234 dating back to last year through 371 plate appearances. There will be four lefties in the Red Sox lineup, including Rafael Devers, Alex Verdugo, Jackie Bradley Jr., and Travis Shaw.

Only the first two batters between Devers and Verdugo have much power against righties dating back to last year. On the flip side, Nathan Eovaldi will take the mound for the Red Sox. He’s got a 3.57 xFIP with 25.8% strikeouts and 4.9% walks.

Like Berrios, Eovaldi allows over 24% line drives and doesn’t get many ground balls at 42%. He’s allowed a higher wOBA to righties at .308 but has been able to keep ISO numbers and wOBA at above-average numbers for a pitcher.

The Blue Jays only have two hitters that have dominated righties dating back to last season. George Springer and Vlad Guerrero Jr. have inflated ISO numbers and high wOBA but other than that, the Blue Jays lineup is filled with inconsistency.

Of course, this year, Zack Collins has shown off some power after taking over for Danny Jansen at catcher. But everyone else has been fairly quiet against righties.

Prediction

I’m not expecting much from these offenses early in tonight’s game. Eovaldi and Berrios are both extremely good pitchers who can throw quality starts with ease. Eovaldi hasn’t thrown more than five innings this season but ultimately has allowed three runs or fewer in every start with at least six strikeouts.

On the other hand, Berrios had a terrible Opening Day start but has responded well allowing just four runs in 11 innings in his last two starts. The hits are still coming but he’s dodging the damage. For your MLB picks, let’s ride the under 4 F5 in the first five innings.
