The 2025 Open Championship
July 17 – July 20, 2025 at Royal Portrush Golf Club
Course Notes
- Royal Portrush, Dunluce Links
- Par 71, 7346 yards
- Designer – Harry Colt (1929)
- A classical links test, though the players will have more undulations and elevation changes around the greens to contend with, plus the smaller than average greens have many subtle burrows to negotiate.
- This puts a premium on finding fairways off the tee, so those with strong strategic approach play can flourish and attack the course.
- Weather is always a wildcard at Portrush, with winds off the North Atlantic and the possibility of rain transforming the course from hour to hour; adaptability and patience becomes as much a weapon as any club in the bag.
- Currently, the weather looks settled for the biggest four days in the sport with light winds and a little precipitation most days that will help take the sting out of the course.
The 2019 Open Championship at Royal Portrush
Trust Rahm’s love of Ireland to be the clincher
Jon Rahm has always enjoyed his sojourns to Ireland and is twice a winner of the Irish Open to illustrate that love of links golf in Ireland.
In 2019, the Spaniard Jon Rahm was highly touted for the Open Championship here at the Emerald Isle, but that fiery Latin temperament got the better of him as the challenging weather conditions closed in, causing him to implode when in contention.
That’s not the first time, and I doubt the last, that Rahm’s temper has undermined the quality in his game; nevertheless, he has gone on to win two major titles since in the States, the US Open 2021 and the Masters of 2023.
Much has happened since his Masters’ triumph, with his $150million move to LIV Golf and an initial slump in form that can now be attributed to the critics who pointed out the hypocritical nature of his decision, accusing him of selling his soul for a dollar!
This year, however, the thirty-year-old looks back on an even keel and his old consistency has come back with a run of nine top 10 finishes from ten starts on the LIV Tour, along with a run of 14th, 8th and 7th in this year’s major championships.
With both Jon Rahm’s wins in Irish Opens’ coming when conditions were conducive to low scoring, this looks the perfect week to jump aboard and support the former world #1.

Let us follow Fitz one more week
Last week’s headline selection, Matt Fitzpatrick is worth rolling over this week at Royal Portrush after a strong showing for us at the Scottish Open and landing top 10 profits.
Six years ago, the Englishman was 20th at the course, while never really contending, but the test this week suits his style of play well. With the large undulations around the greens, there is a premium to fly your ball in all the way, which is slightly unusual for an Open Championship and Links golf.
Like we discussed last week, the 2022 US Open learned much of his golf in the United States, and ball flight with a high apex target style is something he excels in. That said, over many years, Fitzpatrick has become increasingly accustomed to Links golf as his 2023 win at the Dunhill Links Championship emphasised.
Class is a word much overused in sport, but in Fitzpatrick’s case, he has the inner belief from being a major champion which if he is in the mix Sunday, could be crucial.
Certainly the BMR best sportsbook, BetOnline props markets make huge appeal for Matt Fitzpatrick this week along with a smaller stake that he wins his second major at the 2025 Open Championship in Northern Ireland this week.
