• The main defence TPC Twin Cities gets on occasions is its exposed nature to windy conditions but there appears to be little or none this week forecast.

Will it be Champ at the Double?

The question on a lot of golf fans’ lips this week is, will Cameron Champ win the 3M Open for a second time?

There can be little doubt that TPC Twin Cities plays into Champ’s strengths, with little or no trouble for the long drivers of the golf ball, allowing his prodigious length to set him apart from many of his competitors.

Then the thirty-year-old from Sacramento has his favoured Bentgrass greens which will give him his optimum conditions to go low, and his form leading into his favourite week could hardly have been better with many low rounds.

Last week at altitude in the Barracuda, Champ was fast out of the gates and close to the first-round lead, but amazingly missed the cut after a poor second round.  I am happy to forgive him for that poor second round after such a low opening round, and obviously, he is still in good form, which could be a blessing in disguise to preserve his nervous energy for what will be his favourite week of the year.

The weeks prior had seen Champ re-emerge from a time in the wilderness because of injury and lack of confidence, with a top 10 in Canada when getting an unexpected start as an alternate, which kick-starts his year with three top 30s before last week.

That looks like the perfect preparation for Cameron Champ who has the 2021 win followed by two top 20 finishes to show his affinity with the track and event.

Could it be Kurt?

Yes, this week could be the one for Kurt Kitayama who is trending into form in recent weeks.

The thirty-two-year-old Californian has always been long off the tee, so it’s no surprise that he performed well here last year, finishing 6^th.

That recent upturn in form began at the John Deere Classic three weeks ago when he finished 5^th, and interestingly, his putting which is usually his weakness, while not being great was improved markedly.

Kitayama will need to kick on with the flatstick further if he is to add to his one PGA Tour title, although that was an elite event, the Arnold Palmer Invitational a couple of years ago to prove his pedigree.
