Friday night’s American Athletic Conference tilt between No. 24 South Florida and North Texas is shaping up to be the most significant contest these schools have ever played.
USF enters this clash ranked in the Top 25, boasting impressive victories over both Boise State and Florida. Their opponent, the North Texas Mean Green, have stormed out to a perfect 5-0 start, with the Bulls standing as the only ranked team on their schedule so far.
Both squads know how to light up the scoreboard—North Texas leads the conference with an eye-popping 44.8 points per game, having scored at least 33 points in every outing and topping 45 points three times already. South Florida isn’t far behind, racking up 117 points combined in back-to-back wins over South Carolina State and Charlotte.
Yet, in their biggest tests, the Bulls’ defense has delivered, holding Boise State to a mere seven points and limiting Florida to just 16. Only their matchup against Miami turned into a shootout, with South Florida yielding 49 points.
On the defensive side, both teams are among the American’s elite. North Texas has the top-ranked pass defense, giving up only about 136 yards through the air per game, while USF is a force against the run, sitting in the conference’s top five by allowing just 132 yards a contest.
While there’s offensive firepower on both sides, each defense is capable of timely stops. With stakes higher than ever and both teams eager to cement their position atop the AAC, look for this showdown to be competitive—and for the total to stay just under 68.5 points.
