Wemby & Fox: Spurs’ New Duo Ready to Shine
While the Boston Celtics had no pressing needs for their championship roster, the San Antonio Spurs knew they had to make a move to help take advantage of the emerging talent that is second year phenom Victor Wembanyama. Looking for a veteran to pair with Wembanyama, the Spurs added De’Aaron Fox.
In the four games since being acquired by the Spurs, Fox is averaging 21.3 points per game, including 30 points in Monday night’s 131-121 victory over the Washington Wizards. In that game, Victor Wembanyama scored 31 points and it was the first game that both players scored over 30 together.
Looking great against the lowly Wizards is one thing, it’s much harder against the defensive juggernaut that is the Boston Celtics. So the Spurs will definitely put their new dynamic duo to the test in this game tonight.
Boston’s Defense Stands Tall
The Boston Celtics are sixth in points scored at 117.2 and 4th in points against at 108.2, giving them a point differential of +9. Right now, the Spurs are 14th in points scored at 113.2 and 18th in points against at 114.4, giving them a point differential of -1.2. However, with Wembanyama and Fox in the fold, the Spurs offense looks much better. In the four games with Fox in the lineup, the Spurs are averaging 121 points per game.
Boston is a team that has had problems with consistency. Boston will blow a lot of teams off the floor, but sometimes, they come up short in games that they’re expected to win easily. Still, the Celtics are winners of 4 of their last five games and have won their last two games by an average of 27.5 points.

I think San Antonio will make a statement here and keep things close. The pairing of Fox and Wembanyama is still emerging, but their skill sets are perfectly complemented to each other. Take the Spurs to keep this one close, take the Spurs +9.5.

The Dallas Mavericks are the talk of the trade deadline when they traded MVP candidate Luka Doncic, for Anthony Davis, Max Christie, and a draft pick. While most pundits think that that trade was one of the worst of all time, we will not re-litigate that here in this column. Let’s look at the team the Mavericks are currently fielding.
In making the move for Davis, the Mavericks had hoped that they could make a push for the title this year with two players still in their prime: Kyrie Irving and Anthony Davis. However, the Mavericks’ worst fears were realized when Anthony Davis was injured in his Mavericks debut and right now he is set to be out until March. After already receiving heavy criticism for the trade, this injury makes the Mavericks look even worse.
The Golden State Warriors are trying to make one last push with a star player at the end of his prime. The Warriors knew they needed to get Steph Curry’s help, so they acquired Jimmy Butler. Curry and Butler have opposite personalities so it will be interesting to see how well they match.
So far it seems like a good pairing as the Warriors have definitely enjoyed the use of Butler’s ability to get to the free-throw line and that he can operate in the post down low. So far, he and Curry seem to be a perfect fit together and the Warriors are 2-0 since acquiring Butler.
Can the Mavs Stay Afloat?
The Mavericks are short-handed and coming off a 129-128 overtime loss to the Sacramento Kings. The Mavericks will hope to get back on track tonight, as their organization right now is under constant criticism from their own fans and the rest of the league.
The Mavericks will be hoping to tread water and get some wins until they get Davis back in the lineup. Mavs GM Nico Harrison has his legacy on the line. If he doesn’t get results from Davis over the next couple of years, he will forever be scorned as one of the worst GMs of all time. Harrison and the Mavs are hoping to have some success this season in order to quiet the criticisms.

The Mavericks are fatigued and lacking chemistry after the trade that destroyed their franchise. The Warriors are on the upswing, integrating an All-Star caliber player into an already solid lineup. We will fade the Mavericks until they figure things out. Take the Golden State Warriors.
